Jane Lu
In 2010, Jane Lu set out to disrupt the fashion and retail industry with the start of fashion label, Showpo. Through being disruptive in the retail space and capitalising on the rise of social media, Jane’s early adoption of content marketing took Showpo from a garage start-up, to a business that has global reach in a highly competitive market. Jane is a regular keynote speaker for some of the world’s biggest brands and has fronted stages for audiences internationally. The former KPMG cadet and EY analyst founded online fashion hub Showpo when she was A$60,000 in debt. In 2017, Lu debuted on the Australian Financial Review Young Rich list with an estimated wealth of A$32 million.

Showpo is Australia’s leading global fashion company focused on the next generation of young women. Showpo started in Sydney with a laptop and two shelves and is now a global fashion empire shipping to more than 100 countries, with over 4 million followers across social.

In 2020, Showpo launched a new eCommerce platform, enabling it to enhance the shopping experience and accelerate growth in new markets. The Sydney-based, online retailer is one of Australia's fastest growing fashion retailers and has amassed a reach of over four million users across social media platforms.

Hosted by Alex Ovchar (PLD, ’20) who is the Program Leader for Communications at HCA will moderate the discussion with Jane.

Harvard-Australia research collaboration:
Opportunities, Challenges and Solutions
Thursday October 7, 2021, 10am to 11am AEST
(or Wed Oct. 6, 7pm to 8pm Boston time)

When it comes to ground-breaking medical research, Australians punch way above their weight.

This Virtual Round Table discussion provides an opportunity to hear several of our country's leading researchers discuss the why's and wherefores of international research collaboration, with a particular focus on their experience of working with peers based in Harvard University's renowned health laboratories.

The participants, Sydney-based Professor Zdenka Kuncic (Sydney University), Professor Wayne Hawthorne (Westmead Institute) and Professor Philip Hogg (Centenary Institute), will be joined by their Boston-based counterparts, Professor Georges El Fakhri from Mass. General Hosp., and Professors Simon C. Robson and Bruce Furie of Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center.

To moderate the session, we are honoured to have Hala Zreiqat AM, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Sydney University.

-------

Participants will explore options to boost Australian institutions’ ability to attract funding, discuss the elements of successful scientific research grants, and consider whether there are smarter ways to translate hard won research outcomes into commercial successes. All of the panel contributors are awardees of Australia-Harvard Fellowships, funding them to visit laboratories in each direction. The Harvard-based panelists will be encouraged to outline their experience of any international collaborations - benefits and challenges. Perhaps they will also offer opinions as to the global ranking of Australia’s research effort and its potential for improvement.

Master Class, Parable of the Sadhu
Postponed - to be rescheduled after lockdown ends

The Parable of the Sadhu case, based on a famous HBR article challenges participants on issues of moral dilemma, values (which often place goal achievement ahead of other considerations) personal versus group responsibility, and making decisions in a crisis.

The story: An upcoming investment banker is granted a 6-month sabbatical from his prestigious firm to “find himself” and to grow as a future leader. He uses this to undertake a demanding trek and ascent in the Himalayas, the world’s tallest mountain range, accompanied by one other westerner. On the most critical day of their entire journey, an unexpected event occurs that tests him, his values and beliefs, his courage and his ability to make decisions of which he will later be proud.

This Master Class will be led by a Club Life Member, a Harvard MBA who, over the last 5 years, has presented the Sadhu case to a range of audiences with similarly positive responses. No prior preparation is needed other than optional reading of a short (4-page) HBR extract that will be sent to all participants in advance.

While analysing the crisis, its ethical and practical issues, you will ponder how you would react in situations that pose similar dilemmas. With broad applicability to any career or profession, it is particularly recommended, though by no means exclusively, for younger and mid-career members.
