THAT’S A WRAP!

The 2026 Transport Expo has finished and 8649 is now heading back to its home at Enfield Yard.

Thank you to everyone who dropped by to see how our electric locomotive works and hear about its modern day use on work trains in the City Underground.

8649 will be back out on a rail set train again soon.

This short video shows 8649 departing Platform 1 at Sydney Terminal as train number T 141, behind Pacific National’s locomotive 9423.

8649’s LAST DAY AT THE EXPO.

Today is the final day of the expo for 2026 and your last opportunity to look inside the cab of a live electric locomotive.

8649 is open for cab visits until 5pm today and is located at Grand Concourse end of Platform 1 at Sydney Terminal.

8649 will depart Sydney Terminal back to Enfield tonight behind brand new Pacific National locomotive 9423 as follows:

Train number T 141.

Sydney Terminal depart: 6:25pm.

Sydenham: 6:40pm.

Enfield Yard arrive: 7:00pm.

8649 IS AT THE EXPO!

8649 is open for cab visits today, tomorrow and Monday.

This is one of the few opportunities that you will have to hop up inside the refurbished drivers cab and see what it is like to drive a 1980’s vintage electric locomotive compared to Pacific National’s brand new 94 class diesel locomotive.

We are at Grand Concourse end of Platform 1 at Sydney Terminal and look forward to seeing you soon.

8649 IS HEADING TO THE EXPO!

Electric Locomotive 8649 will form part of a small display of heritage and modern locos at this year’s Transport Heritage Expo.

On Saturday 3rd October it will make its way to Sydney Terminal with a Pacific National NR class, a 94 class and freight wagon as follows:

Train Number T 140:

Sydney Freight Terminal depart: 7:15am.

Canterbury: 7:27am.

Sydenham: 7:40am.

Sydney Terminal Platform 1 arrive: 7:53am.

NR class and 94 class will detach and run around 8649 and stable for the display over the weekend.

8649 will be displayed near the Grand Comcourse along side Platform 1 close by to Pacific National’s locomotive display at Sydney Terminal over the long weekend.

You can check out this immaculately presented loco and step inside the driver’s cab on Platform 1 throughout the event.

The 86 class are electric powered locomotives built in the 1980s initially for passenger and freight services to Lithgow and Wyong. Their sphere of operation later extended to Newcastle and Port Kembla as those lines became electrified.

Nowadays 8649 operates overnight rail set trains into the City Underground on a regular basis.

86 CLASS HAULED ROBEL TRAIN TONIGHT

8649 will be taking a Robel Train into the Eastern Suburbs Railway tonight, Wednesday 5th August 2026.

The train will operate as follows:

Train Number M 402:

Enfield Yard depart: 9:49pm.

Marrickville Junction: 10:03pm.

Sydenham: 10:09pm.

Erskineville arrive: 10:14pm.

Detach diesel locomotive.

Start up Electric Locomotive 8649.

Train Number E 402:

Enter possession area and proceed to the worksite.

86 CLASS HAULED ROBEL TRAIN THIS WEEK.

8649 will be taking a Robel Train into the Eastern Suburbs Railway tonight, Wednesday 10th and tomorrow night, Thursday 11th June 2026.

The train will operate as follows:

Train Number M 440:

Enfield Yard depart: 9:44pm.

Marrickville Junction: 9:58pm.

Sydenham: 10:03pm.

Erskineville arrive: 10:09am.

Detach 81 class locomotive.

Start up Electric Locomotive 8649.

Train Number
E 440:

Enter possession area and proceed to the worksite.

8649 will be taking a Robel Train into the City Circle tonight, Monday 13th and tomorrow night, Tuesday 14th April 2026.

The train will operate as follows:

Train Number M 701:

Enfield Yard depart: 8:45pm.

Marrickville Junction: 9:00pm.

Hurstville arrive: 9:16pm.

Hurstville depart: 9:32pm.

Sydenham: 9:43pm.

Central: 9:53pm.

Enter possession area and proceed to the worksite.

If you cannot make it out for tonight’s running, we would like to advise that 8649 will be out again on Monday 23rd April 2026 to do some more work.

We wish to advise that the 86 class movement will not be running tonight, owing to all scheduled work being completed overnight last night.

8649 will be out again on 13th, 14th and 23rd April 2026 and we will share all the relevant information closer to the time.

The train will operate as follows:

Train Number M 740:

Enfield Yard depart: 9:29pm.

Marrickville Junction: 9:36pm.

Sydenham: 9:50pm.

Central Platform 17: 9:58pm.

Detach diesel locomotive and await possession to begin.

Enter possession area and proceed to the worksite between St James and Museum via the City Outer.

If you cannot make it out for tonight’s running, we would like to advise that 8649 will be out again on Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th and Monday 23rd April 2026 to do some more work.

If you cannot make it out for tonight’s running, we would like to advise that 8649 will be out again on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th March 2026 to do some work on the City Outer.
