Today is World Environment Day and we’re reflecting on the key takeaways from Connect for Cause - an online event for Earth Night 2026 exploring sustainability, systems change and collective responsibility across music communities presented by EMC and

Featuring insights from Vicky Keeler () from Fields, Halim Ardie (.ardie) from / , Phuong Le () from , and artist, DJ and broadcaster , the conversation moved beyond the visible gestures - reusable cups, cleaner waste streams, offsets and materials; to ask a bigger question: what happens when sustainability is built into the systems that make music culture possible?

Care for our living planet is growing across the scene. The harder question is whether the structures around the scene make urgent climate action possible, affordable and sustainable long term.

As 20th edition under Paxahau draws to a close in Detroit and Mayor Mary Sheffield’s newly proclaimed Detroit Techno Week (May 18–25) wraps up, we’re looking back to where it all began: the Motor City’s Black underground.

Originally recorded at the Powerhouse Museum in 2022 and now reproduced as part of our EMCAST series, this conversation sees Simon Caldwell ( ) sit down with John ‘Jammin’ Collins (.official) of Underground Resistance () for a long-form discussion tracing Detroit techno from its origins through its resistance and legacy.
Narrated by Talia Jimenez ().

From the city’s early club culture and founding pioneers to Underground Resistance, Exhibit 3000, and questions of ownership, preservation and the enduring underground spirit, this is essential listening on techno’s roots.

EMC launches Behind the Culture. A series that explores the people who shape electronic music scenes across Australia and Asia.

The series starts with Bella () a Meanjin/Brisbane artist, DJ, producer and founder of the newly launched .

From making “weird sh*t” in Ableton to thinking about DJing as a way of working with subtle energy, Bella’s practice is grounded in local meaning, community care and building pathways for others. In our first edition of Behind the Culture, she reflects on the shift from making for the internet to making for real rooms, real people and the communities around her, and why documenting what happens on the ground matters.

Bella is helping shape a version of music culture that feels more connected, more self-led and more rooted in place.

Head to EMC’s website to read the full story about Bella in Behind the Culture story.
