Community radio has always been essential for the underground.

Before platforms, algorithms and polished broadcast studios, there were people climbing aerials, hacking FM lines, broadcasting from rooftops, truck radios and wherever a signal could travel.

In Part One of Grassroots Rising: Community Radio’s Power in APAC, and / Paul Gorrie trace the legacy of pirate radio, from .fm and in North London to Warlpiri radio in the Northern Territory, and how that same DIY spirit continues to shape community radio today.

From coral conservation to ambient soundscapes, NOTEP’s work explores the relationship between nature, the body and sound.

Discover more about NOTEP, a Thailand-based musician and environmentalist, in EMC’s next edition of Behind the Culture series.

After years in commercial music left her disconnected from her own voice, NOTEP began searching for a different way to create. That search led her toward healing, ambient textures, ethereal pop and a slower, more intentional relationship with electronic music.

Her forthcoming EP PAKARANG (ปะการัง), meaning “corals” in Thai, brings that practice into focus. Created alongside her work in coral conservation, the project draws a quiet parallel between coral reefs, the ocean and the human body.

The next edition of EMC’s Behind the Culture series features Thailand based musician and environmentalist NOTEP.

Notep creates intentional work that connects inner landscapes with the natural world, using sound as a space for healing, reflection and deep listening.

After years in commercial music left her disconnected from her own voice, NOTEP began searching for a different way to create. That search led her toward healing, ambient texture, ethereal pop and a slower, more intentional relationship with electronic music.

Her forthcoming EP PAKARANG (ปะการัง), meaning “corals” in Thai, brings that practice into focus. Built alongside her work in coral conservation, the project draws a quiet parallel between coral reefs, the ocean and the human body.

For NOTEP, music is not only something to perform. It is a way to listen inward, reconnect with nature and create spaces where people can feel, soften and return to themselves.
