Excessive screen time before age 2 may affect how a young child’s brain develops.

The National Institutes of Health reports that too much screen exposure in these early years may be linked to later problems with learning, speech, focus, and self-control.

This matters because the first two years are a major period of brain growth. Babies and toddlers learn best through face-to-face interaction, play, conversation, sleep, movement, and responsive care from adults.

Screens can reduce the time children spend practicing these important skills. When screen use replaces talking, playing, exploring, or resting, it may make healthy cognitive and social development harder.

NIH-supported research, including the ABCD Study of more than 11,000 children, has added concern about heavy screen exposure and brain development. The main message is simple: very young children need real interaction and active experiences more than screen time.
