Staff shortages are taking a toll on Australia’s highly-skilled air traffic controllers.

This is part of a trend we are seeing across the Asia Pacific and around the world.

The ITF, in partnership with the Centre for Future Work, has commissioned research to examine the scale, causes and consequences of understaffing in air traffic control operations worldwide.

Fisheries Forward!

The Workshop on the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188) held in Sri Lanka, brought together National Union of Seafarers Sri Lanka-Affiliated to ITF (NUSS) the International Labour Organization (ILO), and key stakeholders to strengthen understanding and implementation of decent work standards in the fishing sector.

The workshop provided a platform for sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and exploring practical approaches to advancing occupational safety, social protection, decent working conditions, and the rights of fishers as the convention is ratified and implemented.

Together, we continue to work towards safer, fairer and more sustainable fisheries and better working conditions for fishers.

As the global alarm bells on artificial intelligence get louder, it is clear the application of AI technology must be done transparently, with independent scrutiny, and always with human control.

Launched today in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Seizing Control: Transport Workers’ Principles for Artificial Intelligence sets out the conditions that employers, technology providers and governments must meet when AI affects transport workers.

The principles establish that no AI system in transport can be responsibly conceived, assessed, deployed or governed without the workers it affects and the unions that represent them.

The launch of these principles is a watershed moment for the responsible application of AI and new technology in the transport sector.
