Last Saturday we celebrated two of our community elders with a surprise party!

In Okinawan culture, 7️⃣3️⃣ is a big milestone birthday 🎉

Disguised as a ‘Christmas in July’ gathering, we successfully surprised Tamaki-san and Satsuki-san with a feast and lots of entertainment, as per any good Okinawan party.

Sydney Sanshin Club performed a birthday folk song they’d been practicing for months + Satsuki-san’s family performed a song together! There was also creative Eisa, Ryukyuan dance and even a couple songs on the banjo!

🎈 Tamaki-san was the first president of Sydney Okinawan Club in 1990. Without him we wouldn’t have this community today. He has lived in Sydney for over 45 years and worked as a chef!

🎈 Satsuki-san is a prominent figure in our community, having lived in Australia for over 50 years. She’s always at events and cooks everyone’s favourite Okinawan home cooking!

Last month, to commemorate Irei no Hi (Okinawa Memorial Day), we participated in the reading of names from the Cornerstone of Peace with 沖縄｢平和の礎｣ 名前を読み上げる集い

81 years after the Battle of Okinawa ended, we still feel the impacts of war on Okinawan society and throughout the diaspora. We feel it is important that we continue to keep these stories alive, and do everything we can to bring peace to Okinawa and the world.

Some of our members reflect on what it was like to participate in this yearly event.

びっくりしました。

I knew that there were a lot of people who died, but the fact that there was so many people, as well as young people, made me even more sad and shocked. This opportunity to read their names made me reflect on our history and our society as a whole. And it also motivated me to do whatever I can to prevent this from ever happening again.

犠牲者100名の名前を読み上げていくのは、沖縄戦を体験した家族から聞いていた戦争体験が蘇りとてもemotionalな体験でしたが、改めて忘れてはいけないことだということや、頑張って自分の子供達にも伝えていきたいと思いました。戦争の話を聞かされたり、考えたりすることが辛いので、大人になってからはあえて考えることを避けてきましたが、お名前を読み上げている間に感じた私の心の痛みや辛い感情は、実際に沖縄戦を体験してきた人たちに思いを馳せるのに必要不可欠なプロセスなんだと感じました。世界中でいまだに戦争が起き続けているのは、まさにこの共感する力が欠落しているからではないでしょうか。真の世界平和は私たちそれぞれの中から。他人の痛みに共感し平和な選択をしていける人間に成長できるよう、自分と家族、友人と共にこれからもこのようなプロジェクトに参加して人間力を磨いていきたいと思います。

お名前を読み上げる、というシンプルな行動でしたが、それによって込み上がる感情は複雑で、自分でも驚きました。追悼の意、平和への決意、そのお名前のご家族への思いを馳せる、その後のアメリカ統治時代に奮闘された方々への尊敬、今ある沖縄の発展の偉大さ...。私がこういう感情を抱き、何かの気付きを得る機会の一部となることも、戦没者の方々の使命を果たされているカタチなのかもしれない、とも考えました。

名前を読み上げるのって意外と難しいなと感じました。フリガナがあっても、たとえば「チエコ」を「チヨコ」と読み上げているのに気づかなかったり。当日は予定が入っていて録画での参加だったので、何回かやり直すことができましたが、ライブだともっと気をつけないといけないなと感じました。いい経験になりました。

中東やユクレイナ、スーダンなどでの紛争、または中国の軍事的脅威をほのめかすような昨今、平和の重要さを改めて考えさせられるいい機会になったと思います。

This Sunday, Kumiko, Karen and Kanasa will be representing Sydney Sanshin Club at Lanterns and Lights Festival 🏮🌟

We will be performing some classical and folk songs on sanshin plus showcasing Ryukyuan dance at Liverpool Powerhouse at 3pm. We hope to see you there!
