Friends of Hebron

Friends of Hebron Friends of Hebron Sydney is committed to advancing access to education for children and young people who live in the Hebron and surrounding areas

Palestinian students are often denied access to a safe, well-resourced education by the challenges imposed by the occupation, such as settler harassment and violence, restrictions on travel and checkpoints, attacks on schools and the demolition of school premises. In 2007 Leichhardt Friends of Hebron began building partnerships in the West Bank of Occupied Palestine to assist education projects w

hich support the most disadvantaged students of the Hebron region. In 2016 the new name Friends of Hebron Sydney was adopted to reflect the wider constituency our work has attracted over recent years. We welcome everyone who supports our work. Friends of Hebron Sydney aim to:

Promote human rights as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations and respect international law in the occupied Palestinian lands;

Raise awareness of human rights and humanitarian issues relevant to the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands; and

Raise money for vital community projects in the city of Hebron and surrounding areas.

👀 FEATURED LIVE AUCTION ITEM: “SILVER SOLIDARITY” 🍉

Ibrahim Muhtadi is a Palestinian architect and design expert whose work transcends boundaries and touches hearts. With a unique blend of design skills and architectural experience, Muhtadi creates memorable visuals through calligraphy, jewellery, graphic design, and Palestinian embroidery. He is a contributor to both local and international exhibitions.

When Israel began its bombardment of Gaza on 7th October 2023, Muhtadi was living and working in Gaza City. Just two days later, his studio and home were destroyed. Despite this immense setback, he evacuated to the south with his family, including his pregnant wife, and made it to Cairo before she gave birth. Since January 2024, they have been in Cairo, but in the Fall of 2024, Muhtadi relocated to Belgium to rebuild his life and create a better future for himself and his family.

Disarming Design from Palestine, an independent non-profit project, fosters thought-provoking designs from Palestine. Each object carries a unique story – these items speak of the reality they are manufactured in, and the suppression of creativity has long been used as a tactic to erase a culture and community during times of war. Yet, artists like Muhtadi have always found ways to keep their creativity alive despite the risks and barriers.

For over a decade, Disarming Design has worked with Palestinian artists, establishing workshops, residencies, and design-related events, including a community centre in Ramallah between 2015-2019. In collaboration with Disarming Design from Palestine, Muhtadi is currently working on his own jewellery collection, which includes a unique pair of silver earrings inspired by the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish.

This beautiful item, inspired by the iconic motifs of the Palestinian Keffiyeh — will be auctioned at the trivia night.

He also serves as the Co-chair and Design Adviser of the UK-based Palestinian History Tapestry.

Um Al Khair will always remain close to our hearts, it was the first community we had the privilege to work with. The brutal murder by Awdah Hathaleen, a much beloved activist fighting for the rights, dignity and safety of the community, is devastating.

The perpetrator was identified by Abraham and the village's residents as Israeli settler Yinon Levi, the founder of Havat Meitarim, who was under sanctions by the United Kingdom and European Union and had previously been sanctioned by the US under the Biden administration for repeated attacks at local Palestinian communities; the latter sanctions were lifted by the Trump administration

Join this great panel hosted by Palestine Justice Movement Sydney to learn more about the silencing of Palestinian Human Rights Activism.

We are heartbroken to hear about another senseless murder at the hands of Israeli settlers, in the village of Umm al Khair.

Umm al Khair is the first village that Friends of Hebron worked in, and it has been constantly under attack by settlers and their encroaching settlements.

The community is very dear to us and our hearts go out to Awdah Hathaleen's family and the community he selflessly served.
