270 people walked into Parliament House today with one shared conviction: that NSW can halve women’s imprisonment by 2030 — and that the time to act is now.
This is not a funding problem — it is a political will problem. The solutions exist. The programs work. What we need now is the decision to invest.
Keeping Women Out of Prison (KWOOP) Coalition’s 10th Annual Parliamentary Breakfast — MC’d by Miriam Corowa and co-hosted by The Hon. Jodie Harrison and The Hon Natasha Maclaren-Jones MLC — was our largest yet. We were honoured by the presence of Excellencythe Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Chief Justice Andrew Bell AC, Justice Dina Yehia, and 19 Members of NSW Parliament including Ministers The Hon. Anoulack Chanthivong MP, The Hon. Yasmin Catley, The Hon. Kate Washington MP, The Hon. Penny Sharpe, and The Hon. Jihad Dib.
Aunty Jo Selfe opened with a Welcome to Country, centring truth: justice reform cannot be separated from its colonial context.
Justice Yehia said it plainly — we know what works. Now we need policy reform, non-siloed investment, and shared responsibility to make it happen. Lived experience must lead the way.
A huge thank you to everyone in attendance. The momentum built today represents the power of collaboration within this space.
