GrainGrowers has today released the High Impact Risks to the Grain Sector Report, which calls on the grain industry to work together with Government to better prepare for risks that could impact grain production and national food security.

The report applies the concept of ‘Grey Rhinos’ to the Australian grain sector to identify key risks.

The risks identified are well-known, but a joint approach is needed to help the industry better prepare and manage each individual risk.

Meet Mark Modra, who farms with his family at Cummins on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia 🚜

They're having a good season so far, although like all growers, are keeping a close eye on costs and margins.

Their usual rotation is legumes, cereals and then canola. However, with higher fertiliser prices this year, Mark significantly reduced his wheat area, with only around 10% of the program sown to wheat and the remainder planted to lentils and other legumes.

"What makes me proud to be a grain grower is being part of an industry that is constantly learning, improving and working together to solve problems. We don’t just focus on the bottom line; we also recognise the importance of supporting the communities that underpin Australian agriculture."

The GrainGrowers team has been on the road over the past few weeks hosting grower updates and visiting growers on farm🌾

The team has been meeting with growers across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland to discuss seasonal conditions, hear about key issues impacting their regions, and see innovative on-farm technology in action.

The first of the updates across New South Wales and Queensland also saw growers taking the opportunity to hear about upcoming initiatives, proposed constitution changes and catch up with others from their area.

GrainGrowers is introducing a new fortnightly Market Update Report, providing growers with additional industry insights and market information.

The latest report highlights:

🌾 A recent upwards revision of Russian and Ukrainian wheat production by the USDA and a general consensus that there is ample wheat supply this year - evidenced by a large South African corn harvest - are offsetting upwards commodity movements.

🌾 CBOT wheat futures are currently sitting at 648.7 USD/bushel. While down on recent highs – they are 26% up on the same time last year.

🌾 Argus Media reports fertiliser demand remains steady, with urea demand focused on summer cropping and the domestic phosphate market remaining largely unchanged.

GrainGrowers welcomes the Australian Government's announcement of consultation on a low carbon liquid fuel demand mechanism.

A domestic low carbon liquid fuel industry presents a significant opportunity for Australian grain and oilseed growers, creating new markets for crops, strengthening regional economies, and enhancing Australia's fuel security.

As this industry develops, it's critical that it is built on Australian-grown feedstocks, ensuring we strengthen domestic supply chains rather than replacing reliance on one imported fuel source with another.

Watch the video to learn more about the grain industry’s role in the low carbon liquid fuels sector.

As Australian grain growers battle rising input costs, increased regulation and an uncertain geopolitical climate, GrainGrowers is proposing a new membership category for the first time in its history.

At its Annual General Meeting on 7 October, GrainGrowers members will be asked to vote on constitutional amendments to create a new category of membership to enable State Farming Organisations to apply to become members of GrainGrowers.

GrainGrowers Chair Rhys Turton said: “GrainGrowers is a strong advocate on behalf of its grower members. With the introduction of an SFO membership category, we can better harness the expertise, networks and advocacy strengths of complementary organisations.

“Together, we can deliver a stronger, more coordinated voice for Australian grain growers at a national level."
