In a recent blog, GrainGrowers' Policy Manager, Trade and Supply Chains Annabel Mactier, explored Australia's critical role in feeding our broader region.

Australian grain exports to Southeast Asia help support food security across a region of over 675 million people, but also:

🌾 Strengthen diplomatic relationships
🌾 Support peace and prosperity
🌾 Reinforce Australia’s role as a trusted food partner

Meet Andrew Messina, a grower based at Spring Park Farms in Mullewa, WA🚜

Andrew farms alongside his wife Tracey, his brother Rod and sister-in-law Sam, supported by five full-time staff. Together, they crop around 13,500 hectares across four properties, growing canola, wheat, and lupins.

This season, like many growers in the region, Andrew is facing a severe mouse plague — the worst he’s seen in 30 years.

Despite the challenges, the season has started well. Early rainfall helped set things up, and careful timing around seeding has been key in managing variable conditions.

"I still get a lot of satisfaction from seeing a crop emerge. You take the risk when you plant a crop, so when you come back and see a one-leaf wheat or canola plant pushing through, there is a sense of relief and excitement."

The latest fertiliser report from Argus Media outlines seasonally weak demand for granular urea, with lower prices driven by softer global market sentiments.

The phosphate market remains quiet but is expected to stay firm amid rising input costs and constrained global supply.

🌾 Urea: There is little domestic demand for granular urea as is seasonally expected but new offers were heard at A$1,180-1,250/t fca Geelong. Argus last assessed granular urea at A$1,180-1,350/t fca Geelong.
🌾 Phosphates: The domestic MAP/DAP market remains quiet with little buying occurring, but suppliers expect domestic prices to stay firm because of rising sulphuric acid prices.

Last week, GrainGrowers convened industry leaders from the finance, freight and supply chain sectors for two separate roundtables to examine the immediate and longer-term impacts of the Middle East conflict on Australian growers.

The roundtables brought together critical parts of the value chain to better understand the challenges facing growers and identify potential measures to relieve the pressure.

The finance roundtable, attended by major lenders, investors and grower stakeholders, highlighted that growers are operating in a fundamentally different risk environment.

While the supply chain roundtable brought together grain supply chain representatives to discuss opportunities to strengthen the resilience and efficiency of Australia's grain freight network.

Grains Research and Development Corporation has announced an investment of more than $115 million over ten years in its Nitrogen Mission, to reduce nitrogen costs and improve yields for growers through new science and technology.

GRDC is also opening a $50 million call for research partners to build out the mission.

The mission will explore breakthrough science, from genetic technologies for biological nitrogen-fixing crops to novel fertiliser production, to help redefine how Australian growers produce, use and manage nitrogen.

Meet Steven Hobbs, a fifth-generation grower farming with his family at Yarrock Farms in Kaniva, Victoria 🌱

This season, Steven is focusing on drought and frost-tolerant crops, and is favouring lentils and beans to help reduce input costs and risk.

Alongside his mixed enterprise, he’s also running a soil carbon project and exploring how farming fits into the broader energy conversation.

"Farmers have always been in the business of growing and storing energy. Historically, it was growing hay for horses and today, we can grow crops like canola to power tractors."

22/05/2026

The latest fertiliser report from Argus Media highlights subdued domestic demand for urea and phosphates, supply outlook concerns driven by global market uncertainty, and the Australian Government securing 90,000 tonnes of urea.

🌾 Urea: Domestic growers and retailers are not actively buying granular urea because of planting and there is enough supply to cover this application. Argus last assessed granular urea at A$1,380-1,400/t fca Geelong.

🌾 Phosphates: Australian suppliers are reporting little domestic demand for MAP/DAP as is seasonally expected. Although there is not much interest, there are concerns about securing more tonnes for the summer crop later in the year as global supply is limited.
