Here's a quick look at some of the activities from last week.

To mark World Environment Day, the ADI New Ireland team partnered with students from Namatanai Secondary School (NSS) to host a cleanathon.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, students came together at the main sporting field and worked collectively to gather rubbish along the route leading to the beachfront, demonstrating their commitment to protecting the local environment and keeping their community clean.

We commend the students and staff of Namatanai Secondary School for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and commitment to keeping their community clean.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the local business houses in Namatanai for providing refreshments, and to the Namatanai LLG for their assistance with transportation. Your support helped make the event a success.

Last week, we had the privilege of being hosted by the NBC Current Affairs team for an insightful interview, highlighting the work of Australian Doctors International (ADI). During the segment, our CEO, Tracey Tatnell, reflected on ADI’s 25+ years of service in Papua New Guinea and the organisation’s future direction.

When asked about a memorable highlight, Tracey shared a powerful story that continues to resonate with her. A Community Health Worker (CHW), who attended an Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EMNC) training delivered by ADI, was later faced with a critical situation. A week after the training, a mother experiencing complications during childbirth was brought to the same facility. Using the skills gained, the CHW was able to safely deliver the baby, with both mother and child in stable condition. The health worker shared that without the EMNC training, she would not have been able to respond effectively in that emergency.

Tracey also acknowledged the dedication of ADI’s staff and volunteers, who continue to travel throughout Papua New Guinea to support communities in rural and remote areas.

Through its ongoing commitment to training, partnership, and service delivery, ADI continues to strengthen local healthcare systems and provide life-saving medical assistance to those who need it most.

Today marks our collective fight against Tuberculosis (TB) in the country, as we stand alongside others in the effort to end its spread.

ADI has been at the forefront of delivering primary healthcare services in rural and remote parts of Papua New Guinea, ensuring communities have access to essential health support.
We have recently expanded our efforts into Gulf Province, working to support the reduction of tuberculosis across the province.

In close partnership with the Gulf Provincial Health Authority and the Santos Foundation, we remain united in our commitment to end the spread of TB through ongoing awareness, early detection, and consistent treatment.

Together, through sustained teamwork and dedication, we can build healthier communities and move closer to a future free from tuberculosis.

This week, the ADI team in New Ireland Province visited Namatanai Secondary School (NSS), marking a significant milestone by delivering its first-ever GEDSI and Safeguarding training conducted in a school setting in Papua New Guinea.

Working closely with the school administration, the team brought together more than 700 students for a dynamic and interactive two-hour session focused on Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) and Safeguarding principles.

Throughout the session, students were guided on the importance of treating everyone with dignity, fairness, and respect, particularly individuals who may require additional care and support. They were encouraged to challenge social norms and cultural perceptions that may cause them to undervalue others within their communities. The training emphasized the role young people can play in promoting equality and fostering inclusive environments within their families, schools, and wider communities.

This interaction, allowed both students and teachers to engage openly, responding to critical questions, and exploring how GEDSI and Safeguarding principles apply in today’s society, where culture and customary obligations often shape attitudes and behaviors. The discussion highlighted the importance of balancing tradition with fairness, respect, and protection for all, especially vulnerable and minority groups.

In addition to the training session, the ADI team met with student leaders to establish peer support groups. These groups will play a vital role in identifying and supporting fellow students who may be experiencing vulnerability or trauma while at school, ensuring that no student feels isolated or unheard.

To further strengthen support systems within the school, ADI established a Safe Information Corner within the school’s Resource Centre. This dedicated space will provide access to youth health and development information, including materials on safeguarding in schools, sexual rights, and family planning.

The NSS Special Events Committee will ensure that students have access to this space and can also seek further information and support through the Support Space at Namatanai District Hospital.

This initiative represents a powerful step forward in building safer, more inclusive learning environments in Papua New Guinea. By equipping students with knowledge, creating peer-led support networks, and establishing a permanent safe space within the school, ADI is helping to empower the next generation to lead with compassion, equality, and respect.

We are delighted to announce that on Friday, 6 February 2026, ADI officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Central Provincial Health Authority (CPHA). The agreement marks the start of a long-term partnership focused on supporting communities along the Caution Bay area in Central Province with essential health services.

This milestone follows ADI’s scoping trip to the Caution Bay area towards the end of last year, during which both CPHA and ADI identified critical health needs requiring targeted support. Through this partnership, we look forward to working closely with CPHA to improve health outcomes and enhance the wellbeing of the people in Central Province.

Through this collaboration, ADI is committed to delivering practical, sustainable health solutions that respond to the needs of the local population, reinforcing our mission to ensure accessible, quality healthcare for all.

Last year, the ADI Gulf team conducted a routine Family Planning supervisory visit to Kukipi Health Centre, a 30-minute boat ride downstream. During the visit, we met Sr. Maria, a dedicated nurse who has served her community at Kukipi Health Centre for the past six years.

Through ADI-supported training in Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) and Family Planning, health workers like Sr. Maria are better equipped to provide quality maternal and neonatal care in rural settings. Despite limited equipment, Sr. Maria and her small team continue to work tirelessly to support mothers during childbirth and through maternal and neonatal check-ups.

Drawing on her training and hands-on experience, Sr. Maria strongly advocates for Family Planning, highlighting its role in reducing maternal complications during childbirth. She is now taking a more proactive approach to delivering Family Planning services across her catchment area and nearby villages.

The high acceptance rate for Family Planning services in Kukipi is encouraging and reflects growing awareness and trust, with more mothers accessing implant services at the health center.

ADI remains committed to strengthening health systems across Gulf Province by investing in frontline health workers through their health trainings, expanding access to life-saving Family Planning services, and supporting rural health facilities to deliver quality care where it is needed most. Together, we are helping build healthier futures for mothers, children, and communities across the province.

A big thank you to frontline health workers like Sr. Maria who continue to make a difference in hard-to-reach communities.

To kickstart the year, we are featuring one of the mothers who kindly shared her story during our recent Family Planning Supervisory Visit to Gulf Province.

Meet 36-year-old Orovea from the remote Lalapipi Village in Kerema, Gulf Province. Orovea is a mother of eight children and works alongside her husband as a subsistence farmer. Her day often begins at sunrise, balancing household responsibilities before tending to her sago garden or going fishing.

While life has been rewarding, Orovea’s greatest concern has always been the health and education of her children. Managing the needs of a large family can be challenging and stressful, particularly when resources are limited.

When Orovea learned that the ADI team would be visiting Kukipi Health Centre to provide family planning implant services over a two-day period, she was filled with excitement. She discussed the opportunity with her husband and decided to receive the five-year implant, allowing her time to focus on her own health while ensuring her children grow strong and are well cared for.

Orovea expressed her appreciation to our team of specialised health workers, noting that this was her first time receiving an implant. She shared that the responsibilities of raising a large family can take a toll on her health, and she was grateful for the support and information provided.

Recently, ADI has delivered several Family Planning programs across Gulf Province, witnessing strong demand and high acceptance within communities. This year, we aim to reach even more remote areas and ensure that these essential health services are accessible to rural populations.
