Performance isn’t just about training harder, it’s also about looking after athlete health and ensuring riders have the tools and knowledge to perform at their best when it matters most.
This week, the South West Sydney Academy of Sport BMX squad participated in concussion baseline testing and athlete education, delivered by Bounce Back Physiotherapy & Osteopathy
Using the Complete Concussions platform alongside VALD performance testing equipment, riders completed a series of assessments that establish individual baseline measures. Should an athlete sustain a concussion, these benchmarks can assist clinicians in monitoring recovery and making informed return-to-sport decisions.
Equally important was the education component of the session. Athletes learned how to recognise the signs and symptoms of concussion, understand the recovery process, and appreciate the importance of reporting potential head injuries early. Building athlete awareness and confidence to speak up is a key part of creating a safe and high-performing sporting environment.
As BMX continues to evolve as a high-performance sport, proactive initiatives such as baseline testing and athlete education play an important role in supporting both performance outcomes and long-term athlete wellbeing.
A huge thank you to Bounce Back Physio for their expertise and support in delivering the session, and to the athletes for their engagement throughout the day.
Thanks to Coach Dan Morris for sharing this video of the squad.
