The Ethics Centre

The Ethics Centre We’re an independent not-for-profit bringing ethics to the centre of everyday life through events, consulting and counselling. No opinion is invalid.

Our Purpose: To serve as a catalyst and enabler for society to think, debate and act in good conscience, particularly in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity. Our Vision: A world in which privilege has been tempered by fairness; in which power has been checked by conscience; in which good and right prevail – for the benefit of all. Our Mission: To encourage and assist individuals and organisation

s to include the ethical dimension in their daily lives.

COMMUNITY GUIDELINES:

The Ethics Centre serves as a catalyst and enabler for society to think, debate and act in good conscience. We want to provide a safe space for people to talk about the issues that really matter and encourage healthy debate. With that in mind, we’ve created the following guidelines to keep the conversation on track. Be respectful
It’s likely you will come across opinions you disagree with – this is the sign of a healthy debate. We're here to discuss ideas, not the individuals behind them. Treat others with the respect you'd like to receive. We'll delete personal attacks, all forms of discrimination (or posts that could be interpreted as such), persistent trolling, mindless abuse, posts we believe exist only to provoke or mislead, and, of course, spam. Be proactive
Take some responsibility for the quality of the conversations in which you’re participating. Help make this a place for intelligent discussion. What we'll do
We reserve the right to remove comments that breach these standards and lock accounts of commenters who breach them repeatedly. We take a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination. If you have any questions regarding these guidelines, please contact us at [email protected].

Our instinct to project human feelings onto AI is natural – but it can lead us to make dangerous assumptions with the way we trust machines.

Philosopher Tim Dean examines our tendency to anthropomorphise AI, and why – at this moment – resisting our urge to humanise something that is fundamentally not human is a matter of personal responsibility.

It's natural to project human thoughts and feelings onto AI. But until they are genuinely ethical, it's dangerous to see them as being more than a machine.

Good storytelling can expose injustice and amplify marginalised voices – but who decides which stories get told?

Prevailing power structures have long shaped what we see, read, and hear in mainstream literature and art. Yet even those who champion diversity can find themselves consuming and upholding the very structures that limit it.

Young writer Sheona Tattersall examines the forces standing in the way of true diverse representation.

Despite growing conversations around diversity, contemporary literature still limits creative freedom for culturally diverse women.

The Ethics Centre is a not-for-profit organisation delivering innovative programs & experiences, designed to bring ethics to the centre of your life.

The Ethics Centre Members’ Gatherings are an opportunity to connect with our community and expand our ethical insights together.

Earlier this month, the conversation led by Philosopher in Residence and Manos Chair, Dr Tim Dean, with an appearance from Director of Engagement, Kathleen Evesson.

We shared updates from the Centre, including a recent article in The Australian by Executive Director Dr Simon Longstaff AO, the publication of our Ethical By Design report on good technology principles in AI, and Dr Tim Dean's appearance on SBS Insight, exploring moral dilemmas.

Our discussion then turned to the difficulty of giving honest, critical feedback – and the importance of ethical humility and a growth mindset when receiving it. We also explored how conflict avoidance shapes the 'social cost' of difficult conversations.

Are we entitled to know every single thing about our partner?

The Drama explores the role of deception and forgiveness in intimate relationships – asking at what point do we owe full honesty to the person we love?

Writer Joseph Earp examines the hit film and the ethics of withholding the truth.

The Drama explores the extraordinarily thorny question of honesty in relationships, and the question of what we owe our partners.
