Bicycle NSW backs a national call for fast, practical action on fuel crisis

The 26-cent per litre fuel tax cut is expected to expire on 30th June. Bicycle NSW urges the Australian Government to instead adopt better, fairer measures to ease the fuel crisis.

We have joined a national coalition of transport and public health organisations to recommend practical, simple, low-cost actions to help households cut fuel use and reduce cost-of-living by making it easier to walk, ride and use public transport for everyday trips.

A joint statement has nine ideas:

1. Crossings and footpaths near schools, shops and stops
2. Pop-up bike lanes on key commuter routes
3. More frequent public transport services
4. Pop-up bus-priority lanes
5. Shorter wait times at push-button crossings
6. Fuel-saving speed limits
7. $100 vouchers for bicycle repairs
8. Rapid grants for bike parking and end-of-trip upgrades
9. $500 vouchers to buy a bicycle

Bicycle NSW CEO Peter McLean said the fuel crisis highlighted an opportunity to provide real alternatives to driving, especially in our cities.

"In towns and cities across NSW, we see millions of trips per day which are only a few kilometres in length. We can easily replace these with cycling and walking if we have the right infrastructure and conditions.

"We need less advice on how to save fuel and instead get help to drive less and move more," Peter McLean said.

“Walking, riding or public transport is a safe, convenient option which more people need to have access to. Not only do we save fuel, but we build healthy and sustainable communities at the same time.”

He added: “These are proven ideas that can be rolled out fast, saving households money and freeing up fuel for people who genuinely need it.”

Bicycle NSW will work with governments and local councils across New South Wales to help turn the actions into on-the-ground solutions that people can use immediately.

Some great advice for exploring Vivid by bike 👇

Thank so much PedalSetGo for helping people become more confident about cycling in Sydney.

With the increasingly connected bike network, jumping on a bike is more inviting than ever - but there are still some bits that are tricky until you learn the short cuts and back street options!

Have you heard about the Great Blue Mountains Trail?

It is a big idea - a regional walking and riding trail from east to west across the Blue Mountains ridgeline.

Blue Mountains City Council is currently asking for feedback on the draft concept designs for 4 sections in the Upper Mountains, spanning 6km span from Kiah Lookout in the east to Narrow Neck Road in the west.

A mix of shared paths, separated cycleways and 30km/h 'Quietways' is proposed to create continuous and safe spaces for walking and cycling.

Please let BMCC know what you think about the proposed route, path types, crossings, rest areas and safety treatments.

Existing road space will be reallocated to accommodate the trail, narrowing vehicle lanes, and verges will be paved where needed. Speed limit reductions, to 40km/h along the entire corridor with 30km/h in the identified high activity areas, are being investigated but need as much community support as possible!

The survey is open till 9am on 8th June:

Council has said that submissions by email will be accepted until 15th June:

Funding was secured through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program. The final scope for the first tranche of works will be determined during detailed design, but Council aims to build a substantial chunk of the 4 routes by December 2027, the deadline stipulated by the funding program.

It is Friday again (how does it come round so fast every week?!) which means it is time for another update on the advocacy, community and membership activities that keep the Bicycle NSW team occupied.

Over the last few days, we:

- Took part in Associations Unleashed, a 2-day conference organised by Answers for Associations, and gained insights and tips from speakers and attendees on how to improve our Membership journey.

- Hosted the Raising Smart Riders: E-bikes, Safety, Responsibility & NSW Law webinar with legal partner Advantage Legal.

- Spoke to several media channels, including 2GB and Channel 9, about the latest e-bike regulation changes.

- Joined the Sydney Airport Active Transport Forum, a regular gathering of councils, Bicycle User Groups, Transport for NSW and SYD planning staff to discuss walking and cycling in and around the airport precinct.

- Attended the monthly Traffic and Transport Liaison Group meetings for key major projects - the Warringah Freeway Upgrade, the Western Harbour Tunnel and the M7-M12 Integration.

- Published a new blog article about the half billion dollar win for walking and riding in the Federal budget.

- Finalised forward budget planning for 2026/27.

Did you know that Bicycle NSW is only funded by membership fees and donations?

With the End of Financial Year (EOFY) 2026 approaching, there is a fantastic opportunity to make your support go even further.

Every donation over $2 is fully tax-deductible. Please donate before 30 June 2026! You will ensure that Bicycle NSW can keep up its advocacy work - while reducing your taxable income.

Greater Sydney Parklands is developing a Sustainability Strategy to guide how its parks - Callan Park, Centennial Parklands, Fernhill Estate, Parramatta Park and Western Sydney Parklands - should be improved to support nature, community connection and people’s health and wellbeing.

Please fill out the survey by 14th June:

This is a great opportunity to elevate the importance of active transport links, both to and within the parks.

Bicycle NSW would like to see actions in strategy to:

- require regular consultation with active transport peak bodies to discuss projects to improve path networks and opportunities raised by the community

- priortise access to the parks by walking, cycling and public transport over private cars

- develop identified blue-green grid and strategic cycleway corridors that run through, to and along the parks

- support council and state government active transport projects that improve access to the parks with consistent and vocal advocacy.
