Council on the Ageing New South Wales

Council on the Ageing New South Wales COTA NSW represents the rights & interests of people over 50 in NSW. We’re an independent, consumer-based non-government organisation.

The Council on the Ageing (COTA) NSW is the peak organisation for people over 50 in our state. COTA NSW has long had a clear vision of the sort of society we want to bring into being. We’re committed to achieving a society where older people are respected, consulted, included, represented and heard. We are determined to make sure the contributions of older people to society are valued and they hav

e access to the opportunities other members of the community take for granted. Consulting with our members and supporters, we work with politicians, policy makers, service providers and the media to ensure the views of older people are heard and acted on. We also provide advice and connections to ensure that older people are well-informed about the opportunities that are available to them and how to make the most of their lives.

Sadly 1 in 5 men in NSW will get prostate cancer by age 85, but having the right information can help.

Many prostate cancers do not cause symptoms in the early stages, but there are some symptoms to look out for:

➡️ Problems passing urine
➡️ Having to pass urine more often
➡️ Not being able to wait to go to the bathroom
➡️ Pain or burning when passing urine
➡️ Blood in the urine or semen
➡️ Pain in the lower back or hips
➡️ Tiredness, shortness of breath, weight loss or dizziness

is a great time to learn more and be proactive about your health. Speak with a GP about any symptoms or concerns.

David Brett, the Policy and Research Lead from the Council on the Ageing (COTA) NSW, provided a very informative session on expert volunteering.

COTA NSW is a member-based organisation working to ensure that older people in NSW are valued, respected and able to live well with dignity and opportunity.

Topics covered include ageism, loneliness, COTA’s research and advocacy work, and the role of volunteers in their programs.

With volunteers supporting the health and well-being of so many in the aged care sector this session provided valuable insights into meaningful, respectful engagement.
