Tomorrow the Independent Public Inquiry into AUKUS will be launched. A massive thanks to for driving this much needed inquiry.

The AUKUS deal was conceived in secret and not costed by Treasury — and continues to be shrouded in secrecy despite the incredibly high stakes and massive cost, at a time of global conflict and a cost-of-living crisis in Australia.

The Sydney Peace Foundation is pleased to be among the organisations supporting this inquiry. The five commissioners leading the inquiry will be announced tomorrow.

On the International Day of UN Peacekeepers (29 Mary) we honour peacekeepers for their service and sacrifice. In the words of UN Secretary General Antonia Guterres, peacekeepers ‘Embody humanities highest ideal - peace’

Since 1948, when the first UN peacekeeping mission was established in the Middle East. to monitor the Arab-Israel War truce, more than two million men and women have served under the UN flag in more than 71 UN peace operations. Since 1948, nearly 4,500 peacekeepers have been killed, including 59 last year. No one should be killed serving the cause of peace.

It is a sad irony that in the very place UN peacekeeping mission was established, war and genocide persist.

This year’s theme , “Invest in Peacekeeping”, reminds us that peace needs global solidarity and the protection of those whose mission is to make peace possible.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we reflect on the pain endured by the Stolen Generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families, their communities, and their culture.

Sorry Day reminds us of our ongoing commitment to truth-telling, to justice, to listening, and to walking in solidarity with First Nations peoples.

The Sydney Peace Foundation acknowledges the resilience and strength of survivors, their families, and their communities.

It’s beyond time to move from Sorry to Action.

Always was, and always will be

The UN General Assembly adopted a climate resolution on May 20th, confirming that the climate crisis is a legal obligation under international law, not a political option. Led by Vanuatu and supported by 141 countries, this resolution calls on all member states to prevent significant environmental damage and fulfil their existing Paris Agreement pledges.

This milestone builds directly on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion, where 2026 Sydney Peace Prize recipient Jennifer Robinson served as legal counsel for Vanuatu.

The case began with Pacific Island law students , now recognised as the UN Champions of the Earth, who initiated this campaign to protect their communities from climate harm.
