*Please note that First Nations people may find references to those who have passed.*

Today we celebrate Mabo Day, honouring the extraordinary legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Meriam man from the island of Mer in the Torres Strait.

Alongside advocates like Father Dave Passi, Sam Passi, Celuia Mapo Salee, and James Rice, Eddie Mabo’s efforts led to the landmark Mabo High Court decision in 1992.

This historic ruling paved the way for the Native Title Act by recognising that First Nations people hold ownership claims over the land. The High Court decision also overturned the lie of terra nullius, which means “nobody’s land” and erased thousands of years of First Nations custodianship of this continent.

We honour and draw inspiration from the strength, courage, and enduring legacy of Eddie Mabo, whose work continues to shape the lives of First Nations peoples today.

We also honour the First Nations leaders carrying forward his legacy of using the law to advance justice today — including Uncle Pabai, Uncle Paul, Aunty McRose, and their communities.

This week we’ve seen attacks on the trans community.

These attacks are part of a coordinated strategy targeting the whole gender equality framework, and come from the same global playbook.

It’s designed to force us all into outdated gender categories and wind back things like abortion rights, protections from domestic violence, LGBTQIA rights.

None of this makes women or the LGBTQI community safer.

In Australia, trans and gender diverse people are protected by the S*x Discrimination Act, as well as the anti-discrimination laws of many states and territories.

But some politicians use trans women as a political talking points for political gain. It’s cruel, damaging and wrong, and not what fair-minded Australians stand for.

Huge win! 🎉 Today the Full Federal Court found that Roxanne Tickle was directly discriminated against, and affirmed the right of trans women to live free from discrimination.

The Full Federal Court unanimously found that Ms Grover and Giggle for Girls Pty Ltd engaged in unlawful direct discrimination against Ms Roxanne Tickle on the ground of her gender identity.

All three judges changed the original finding of indirect discrimination to one of direct discrimination.

It has never been more important for us to stand together as a community and protect our shared values of inclusion, respect, and compassion. Thanks to Roxy’s courage, we’re one step closer.
