The Fair Work Commission has issued a new 'minimum standards order' for gig workers who perform on-demand delivery work.
If you deliver for Uber, Doordash or a similar platform, these changes may apply to you.The new standards cover a range of issues affecting delivery workers, including minimum rates of pay, vehicle requirements, insurance protections and the right to take time away from work.
Most importantly, eligible workers may now be entitled to a minimum earnings floor depending on the type of vehicle they use:
• $31.30 per hour for delivery workers using a bicycle or e-bike
• $31.50 per hour for delivery workers using a motorcycle or scooter
• $32.00 per hour for delivery workers using a car or van (up to 1 tonne)
Importantly, these rates apply only to engaged time. This means the time spent completing a delivery, not the time spent logged into the app waiting for or searching for jobs.
These changes are likely to have the greatest impact on workers who are young, migrants, or from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, who can be particularly vulnerable to exploitation.
This is an important step towards stronger protections for gig workers. However, these standards are only an interim measure, with the Fair Work Commission expected to undertake a broader review in the future.
ICLC welcomes these reforms and calls for further protections for this often overlooked group of workers.
