Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket at the General Gordon Hotel meat and drink raffle last month - we were able to raise a total of $3,082 (and fourty nine cents!) for our service.

An extra large thank you to the General Gordon Hotel for their ongoing support of our services! The ICLC relies on donations in order to run, and events such as these help keep the doors to our service open.

The Inner City Legal Centre supports the call that the NSW Government should drop the charges laid against the Town Hall protesters on February 9.

The Public Assembly Restriction Declaration has been declared unconstitutional and invalid by the NSW Court of Appeal. That evening, NSW Police had arrested, charged, detained and exercised a range of powers that evening using these extraordinary powers.

The NSW Law Enforcement Conduct Commission is now investigating the events of that evening. In recent months we have seen a significant encroachment on our right to peaceful and democratic protest. No one should fear a violent arrest or risk a criminal conviction for expressing a political opinion or belief.

Today is Mabo Day, marking the anniversary of the Mabo v Queensland (No 2) decision and celebrating the life of Plaintiff Eddie Koiki Mabo.

The Mabo decision overturned the doctrine of ‘Terra Nullius’ (Latin for “no man’s land”) which was used to displace Aboriginal and First Nation’s people during colonisation. The Native Title Act 1993 followed the decision, enshrining in law the significant bond between Country and Traditional Custodians.

Eddie Mabo sadly passed away five months before the decision in Mabo Vs. Queensland (No 2) was handed down.

Despite the firm foundations set by the Native Title Act, many other laws perpetuate discrimination and incarceration of Aboriginal and First Nation’s people in so called Australia.

The ICLC calls for our friends and supporters to stand in solidarity and support Aboriginal-led efforts for reform and reconciliation.

Following Roxy Tickle's recent victory in the Federal Court, a number of MP's have called for amendments to the S*x Discrimination Act.

This would have negative consequences for trans, cis and inters*x people - paving the way to further policing of gender presentation, identity, s*xuality and our body parts. It is discriminatory and it is scary.

Help us take action now. Sign Equality Australia’s petition, and contact your local MP to voice your concerns.

Today is LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day.

The ICLC assists victim survivors through our LGBTQIA+ Legal Service, a service which provides community-specific legal advice for LGBTQIA+ people experiencing DV. We also provide the only LGBTQIA+ specific duty room in all of NSW.

We call for a better institutional understanding of LGBTQIA+ experiences - both amongst first responders and community.

Police and emergency responses to LGBTQIA+ DV situations are too often rooted in stereotyping - using frameworks of heteronormativity to address the situation. Survivors are often mistakenly identified as perpetrators, or not taken seriously at all.

Familial violence against LGBTQIA+ people is also under reported and under researched in contrast to the broader population.

The ICLC provides a safe, judgement free, confidential legal service for LGBTQIA+ people who use and/or experience violence.

Phone: (02) 9332 1966 Email: [email protected] or reach us at the Downing Centre Local Courts from 9am-1pm.

Today marks the beginning of Reconciliation Week. This year’s theme is ‘All In’ - asking us all to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day.

We ask that the community take time this week to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live and to get involved with Aboriginal-led efforts to restore the original stories, culture and practices of this land.
