The ICLC is partnering with Sparke Helmore to provide a clinic for domestic violence and apprehended violence orders - with a focus on LGBTQIA+ community members.

This will allow us to provide additional, free, legal assistance in this area of law. The clinic is open to both victims and defendants.

The ICLC had a recent tribunal win in which our client used they/them pronouns.

The ICLC emailed the Court & opposing lawyers ahead of time, to request the Court use they/them pronouns. The Court respected this request after being given a heads up.

Here are some things to know if you want to use gender neutral pronouns in the Court:

You can ask your lawyer, the court registrar, or the judges associate (assistant) for help clarifying your pronouns before you go to court.

Depending on the case, you can provide a 2-sentence letter explaining the respectful way to refer to you in court and provide it to the Judge & lawyers (ask your lawyer about this first).

When you introduce yourself to the Court, you can also mention your pronouns then.

If you need help with this - contact the ICLC for advice. You can reach us via phone, email or our online webform.

In some cases we are also able to speak to your lawyer and/or the police prosecutor to explain how to use gender neutral pronouns.

The ICLC would like to congratulate our dear friend and supporter Councillor Olly Arkins on her new position as Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney.

Clr Arkins is the first trans woman to be appointed to such a high position on the City of Sydney Council. Watch this space to see the wonderful things she will achieve for our city in the coming months!

This violence must end. We encourage anybody impacted by the recent Police raids on Oxford Street to contact the Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC). You may be entitled to compensation.

For the second time in a month, police have entered LGBTQIA+ owned and operated venues with drug detection dogs, subjecting patrons to searches and arrests in what is claimed to be an effort to identify prohibited drugs.

These actions continue a long and deeply troubling history of over-policing of LGBTQIA+ communities in Darlinghurst and greater Sydney.

Katie Green, CEO of the Inner City Legal Centre, said: "Police have disproportionately targeted our communities on Oxford Street since LGBTQIA+ people were criminalised in the 1960s and 1970s.

To see police still conducting themselves this way in 2026 is completely unacceptable.”

Policing practices that single out our community only reinforce fears of discrimination, homophobia, and not being treated with dignity and respect when reporting crime.

“This is bad drug policy. It is bad policing. It damages community trust. And it must stop."
