Migration Law Update: there are new changes affecting how Student visas are reviewed at the Administrative Review Tribunal. Swipe through for more.

IARC's take: "IARC is concerned how this will impact international students facing vulnerability such as domestic and family violence or workplace exploitation. Without legal support, people may miss deadlines and opportunities to present their case, which will have severe consequences."

Migration Law Update: major changes have been introduced for visa review applications at the Administrative Review Tribunal. Swipe through our post for the details.

IARC's take: "We are very concerned about how these changes will impact temporary visa holders experiencing vulnerability. This includes people experiencing domestic and family violence and exploitation. They will no longer have the opportunity to be properly heard, or the opportunity to put their case forward with an interpreter at a hearing. For people already in crisis, losing the opportunity to tell their story in their own words significantly increases the risk of an unjust outcome."

IARC in the news: Our CEO and Principal Solicitor Joshua Strutt spoke to about how Australia’s immigration system can discriminate against people with health issues.
~
"We often see families considering leaving children off applications because they're worried it might mean their visas are refused,” he said.

"Or we even see parents just leaving Australia because they don't want to do that to their children. It's pretty harrowing."

Mr Strutt said Australia's immigration system was "really confusing" and it could be unclear what visa people would be eligible for when they arrived.

He was calling for all visas to have access to health waivers, and for the home affairs department to be given flexibility to consider each family's unique situation.

"It really discriminates [against] people with health issues," he said.

"If they're working in critical industries, [they] should have made available to them health waivers so they can stay here as a family unit."

We did it.💜🌈

Thanks to your generosity, we raised $6,000 (!!!) in our matched donations campaign – which means $12,000 total for migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum.

We are so grateful - every single donation made a difference.

Working in a community legal centre can be hard, especially when the world feels heavy. But moments like these – connecting with community at Fair Day, and the outpouring of support we’ve felt this week – helps so much.

Thank you!
