Important safety notice, please share!

This Monday 27 July 2026, a national test of AusAlert will send a loud, siren-like Critical Alert to every compatible device in Australia including phones, tablets, smartwatches, children's safety watches and CarPlay.

For people experiencing domestic and family violence, this could expose a hidden phone or safety device. Silent mode and Do Not Disturb will NOT stop it. The only way to prevent the alert is to switch the device off or put it in aeroplane mode at least one hour before the test, and for 24 hours afterwards.

Test times: 2pm AEST (NSW, ACT, QLD, VIC, TAS) | 1:30pm ACST (NT, SA) | 12pm AWST (WA)

Last year, we had to refer out more than 250 victim-survivors of domestic and family violence because free services like ours are critically underfunded to do this important legal work.

Lack of funding forces us, and many other community legal centres, to turn people away, or they can face lengthy wait times. This shouldn't be happening when someone is trying to escape violence.

IARC in the news: Senior Solicitor Kristie Mellor spoke to about barriers to accessing the family violence provisions (FVPs) including a key part of the process that needs to change to ensure victim-survivors on temporary visas can seek safety.

Accessing important safety nets like the FVPs often requires legal expertise – particularly when there are multiple complexities to navigate, such as when abuse has made it "essentially impossible" for someone to access the documents required.

Right now, many migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum cannot access the legal advice they need to leave a violent relationship because the services that can do the work aren't being properly funded.

In this article, Kristie explains that the Department of Home Affair decides whether a relationship is "genuine" before it considers evidence of family violence, meaning many clients are "falling down at the first step." She spoke about the need for this process to change, and the importance of accessing free legal advice to navigate it.

IARC is already seeing the impact of the VAC increases on our clients. We have families unable to stay together because they can’t afford the fee increases.

IARC's take: "We are very concerned about how these changes will impact temporary visa holders experiencing vulnerability. This includes people experiencing domestic and family violence and exploitation. They will no longer have the opportunity to be properly heard, or the opportunity to put their case forward with an interpreter at a hearing. For people already in crisis, losing the opportunity to tell their story in their own words significantly increases the risk of an unjust outcome."
