Good luck to the Socceroos as they take on Türkiye in their first match of the Men’s World Cup.

Throughout the tournament, we’ll be keeping a close eye on three Aussie players named in UNHCR’s symbolic Gamechanging Team: Mohamed Touré, Awer Mabil and Nestory Irankunda.

All three have refugee backgrounds and are proudly representing Australia on the world stage.

They embody what’s possible when talent and determination are met with opportunity.

Thank you, Peter, for your ongoing support of refugees and displaced people.

Photos. Passports. A pizza cutter.

These are some of the items people took with them when they were forced to flee their homes.

In Ecuador, UNHCR photographed the belongings people reached for in the moments before they fled, offering a glimpse into what mattered most when everything else had to be left behind.

If you had only moments to leave home, what would you take with you?

Just 15km from the frontline, life continues in Sloviansk, Ukraine.

For more than a decade, the city has lived with war, attacks and occupation.

This close to the frontline, solidarity matters most.

That is why UNHCR supports local initiatives that bring people together, providing mental health support, workshops and humanitarian assistance.

An Ebola outbreak is threatening communities already affected by conflict and displacement in eastern DR Congo.

More than 2 million displaced people live in areas at high risk of transmission.

Without urgent preparedness and prevention efforts, the risk of Ebola spreading further will only increase.

Urgent action is needed to protect displaced families and host communities.

For many Australians, bushfires are a fact of life.

In the DRC, Rachel Criswell from UNHCR says recurring outbreaks of diseases like Ebola and Mpox can feel much the same.

"Just like what you would all know to do with bushfires... they have the ability, the reflexes to deal with that here," she says.

But the lack of a vaccine and the outbreak hitting urban and semi-urban areas, along with the ongoing conflict, means this is a bad year.

Take a moment this weekend to read this ABC article:

Tensions are running high as officials fight to stop the rapid spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where aid workers tell the ABC they are already playing catch-up with the deadly disease.

A fresh wave of deadly strikes has devastated cities across Ukraine.

Dozens of civilians have been killed, including children, and families have fled their homes due to large-scale drone, rocket and missile attacks.

After more than four years of full-scale war, people continue to live in fear.

UNHCR and local NGO partners responded quickly to the recent wave of attacks, providing and installing emergency shelter materials for vulnerable families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed.

As the war continues, there is one message we’ll keep saying loud and clear: civilians are not a target.

Socceroo Mohamed Touré knows the power of football.

After his family rebuilt their lives in Australia following displacement from Guinea, Mohamed went on to represent Australia on the international stage and play professionally for Norwich City FC in the UK.

Mo has been named in UNHCR’s Gamechanging Team, a squad that recognises footballers whose lives have been shaped by displacement.

We’ll be cheering Mo as he wears the green and gold at the World Cup.

Despite a declared ceasefire, repeated strikes and evacuation orders continue across parts of Lebanon, forcing families to flee again and again.

Fear and uncertainty are mounting.

UNHCR continues to work on the ground, providing emergency aid, shelter, cash assistance and mental health support to families in crisis.

More support is needed. Please consider making a donation today: https://www.unrefugees.org.au/emergency-response/middle-east-emergency/

A child once slept in this room. Now, only fragments remain.

For thousands of children in Lebanon, conflict has turned bedrooms into rubble, schools into shelters and everyday routines into uncertainty.

Children deserve more than survival. They deserve safety, stability and the chance to simply be children.

They deserve a childhood.
