This is Valentyna.

At 79, she never wanted to leave her home in eastern Ukraine.

But as attacks intensified, her roof was damaged, the power was cut and access to essentials became impossible. Forced to flee, she was evacuated with only a few belongings as explosions and shells erupted around her.

Valentyna found temporary shelter at a UNHCR-supported transit centre in Kharkiv. She received emergency cash as well as a bank card, restoring access to her pension. While she is safe for now, she is still unsure of her future.

Four years into the full scale war, Ukrainians like Valentyna continue to need safety, shelter and support.

When Qasim fled Syria, he never gave up on his dream of helping others.

Thanks to a UNHCR DAFI Scholarship, Qasim was able to complete his education and become a physiotherapist.

Today, he's helping Syrian children recover from the physical impacts of war, supporting them as they take their first steps toward healing.

Qasim is grateful to UNHCR for giving him the chance to go to university. He says his life is much better as a result.

Meet Hamed Allahyari, a refugee from Iran whose story is one of courage and culinary passion. 🌏🍲

In Iran, Hamed faced arrest for being an atheist and joining a group opposed to the government.

He fled with his girlfriend, boarding an overcrowded boat from Indonesia to Christmas Island.

They eventually reached Australia and settled in Melbourne, where Hamed reconnected with his love for cooking – a passion inspired by his mother.

Since arriving in Australia, Hamed has opened two inspiring hospitality ventures: Salamatea House – a not-for-profit café providing job opportunities for asylum seekers and new immigrants – and Sunshine Kababi.
