conducted in partnership with the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies at the University of Sydney, shows that electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly practical and affordable choice for Australian households. Drawing on responses from more than 1,800 EV owners, the survey reveals that range anxiety is one of the concerns most transformed by ownership experience.

Before buying, many prospective owners see it as a major barrier, alongside worries about public charging availability and upfront cost. Once they actually drive an EV, however, these concerns ease sharply: a much larger share of owners rate range anxiety as "not at all important," and far fewer flag it as a serious issue. The pattern suggests that day-to-day experience helps drivers recalibrate their expectations about how far they can really go between charges.

The EV Ownership Survey 2nd Edition Summary is here β€” and the numbers speak for themselves. πŸ“Š

For the second year running, the Electric Vehicle Council has partnered with the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney to survey more than 1,800 Australian EV owners.

The findings confirm what we’ve long argued: EVs are no longer a niche choice. They are a practical, cost-effective option for everyday Australian households. πŸ’ͺ

Here’s what the data shows:

πŸ’° 70% of EV owners have reduced their fuel costs by more than 60%
πŸ”§ Nearly three-quarters spend less than $300 a year on maintenance
πŸ”Œ 93% can charge at home - and 85% did exactly that in the week prior to the survey
β˜€οΈ 80% of EV-owning households have rooftop solar
πŸš— Range anxiety, charging concerns, and upfront cost worries all fall sharply after purchase
πŸ“ˆ 59% of leased EVs are expected to enter the second-hand market within six years - critical for mainstream affordability

These findings have real implications for policy. Government incentives, including the Electric Car Discount, remain decisive for many buyers, and the pipeline of affordable used EVs depends on keeping those settings in place.

We’d like to thank our partners at ITLS, Chargefox Amber Electric, AEVA Australian Electric Vehicle Association and all EVC members who supported and promoted this research.
