Australia-Japan Society of NSW. (AJS-NSW) was delighted to host historian for a fascinating lecture, The Lady Samurai: A Truer History of Japan’s Unification.

Drawing on original letters and historical records preserved at Osaka Castle, Dr. Kitagawa challenged conventional views of Japan’s unification by revealing the remarkable leadership of Nene (Lady Kita no Mandokoro), wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Far from being a figure behind the scenes, Nene emerged as a political leader, diplomat, entrepreneur and unifying force whose influence helped shape Japan’s future.

One of the evening’s most thought-provoking messages was, “Make invisible things visible.” By rediscovering overlooked historical figures, we gain a richer understanding of leadership—one that values diplomacy, resilience, compassion and the power of building lasting relationships alongside military achievement.

Our sincere thanks to Dr. Kate Kitagawa for sharing her research, to filmmaker and media professional Tak Nakano for expertly facilitating the discussion, and to everyone who joined us for another memorable AJS-NSW event.

If you enjoy thought-provoking discussions like this and want to connect with others who share an interest in the Australia–Japan relationship, AJS-NSW hosts a diverse program of business, cultural, social and networking events throughout the year.

We’d love to welcome you as a member. Learn more at https://ajsnsw.org.au/.
