Our Monday group got so much done today!

For the first hour and a half we did an amazing Macbeth workshop with our friends at Bell Shakespeare. As usual, it was very rewarding for our artists, who loved flexing their dramatic muscles!

In the second half of the session we split into small groups to work on different aspects of 'Gastrobotick' simultaneously:
- Some artists talked about the motivations of their family characters.
- Some artists developed their physicality as robotic nurses/evil doctors/witches.
- Some artists facilitated the vocal recording of the final monologue of the play.

Finally, we re-grouped and staged the final monologue with the whole ensemble present.

All in all, a 10/10 for effort, fun and accomplishments!

This week our Tuesday team started shooting another scene! One of the key actors in the scene couldn't make it, but we adapted and shot every moment of the scene that didn't require them. The team showed amazing flexibility!

We also started the edit and continued designing our animated characters!

Yesterday our Monday crew built on the foundations of last week’s blocking workshop. We ran the first two scenes of ā€˜Gastrobotick’ again and incorporated given circumstances.

We also talked about the importance of imagination and original stories - things that AI is incapable of!

Our Tuesday team were really productive today! Without giving away too much about ā€˜Framing the Finger’, today our team built a small set using cardboard, paint, animation and a few video game parts.

One out of three scenes has now been shot in full!

Today our Monday gang did a rough blocking of 90% of the ā€˜Gastrobotick’ script! Stepping through a script can be a tedious process, but our artists rose to the challenge!

We also talked about costumes and the importance of uniformity in an ensemble. ā€˜Gastrobotick’ contains an ensemble of shady doctors, interns and nurses - how do we make them look like a team?

Yesterday our Tuesday crew looked at screenplay formatting. We then went through the script for our upcoming project 'Framing the Finger' and identified all the sets, costumes and props we need for each scene.

After taking a break, we looked at the animated elements required for the project, and we had a go at designing some of the characters.

Today our Monday crew learnt about characters and intentions.

Questions we asked included:
- When/Where is the play set?
- Who is in this scene?
- What do the characters want?
- Why are the characters saying these words?

Yesterday our Monday gang finished the casting process for James Penny’s ā€˜Gastrobotick’! We have a full cast now!

We also broke down the elements of a play and film scripts. Did you know that the name for a scene title is a ā€œsluglineā€?

This term our Tuesday artists are working towards creating one short film, focusing on different skills each week.

This week, we chose a concept, fleshed out the characters and started to write the script.

ā€˜Framing the Finger’, a story from the twisted mind of Heath Ramsay, promises to be a rollercoaster of absurdity and dark comedy. A man stands accused of breaking and entering, grand theft auto and vehicular manslaughter, but who’s really to blame? Is it the fingers on the steering wheel? The foot on the accelerator? The eyes that saw the whole thing? This film will break down what makes a killer.

Expect lots of silly voices, puppets and green screen work!

Midnight Feast was back in action today and this term our Monday artists are working on ā€˜Gastrobotic’, a short play James Penny has been writing and refining for more than two years!

In today’s session our focus was on reading and casting.

Reading a new text aloud for the first time can be daunting, especially when in front of a room of your peers! Our artists all rose to the challenge and each read for a variety of different roles.

On the casting side, we challenged our artists to keep an open mind and read for roles that they hadn’t read before - and the results spoke for themselves! We made some amazing discoveries about the skills of our actors! So far we have six roles locked in, with the rest to come in our next Monday session!
