As we celebrate National Volunteer Week 2026, we recognise the compassion and dedication of those who give their time to support others at lifeโ€™s most vulnerable moments.

Many people expect palliative care to be depressing, but in reality, it is quite the opposite. In this story, Maria Greenwood, a Palliative Care Volunteer with the Nepean Blue Mountains Palliative Care Volunteer Service, shares her experience, highlighting the deeply humbling and rewarding nature of the role and the powerful connections it brings.

Sandra wears many volunteer hats and is a worthy winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Not only is she a busy volunteer board member for the Southern Highlands Community Hospice, a not-for-profit charity organisation in Bowral, but she has also played a key role in the introduction of their local community-based volunteering program. Sandra manages the coordination, training, and support for new volunteers. She also takes an active mentoring role, ensuring new recruits understand the scope of their positions and how best to interact with clients and their families.

The Nepean Hawkesbury Supportive and Palliative Care Volunteer team have made a profound and measurable impact across the Nepean Blue Mountains community. The team overcomes significant obstacles, often travelling long distances to visit people who live alone or have little or no other support. They enable patients to remain at home by providing transport, shopping assistance, and social connection, which helps to prevent isolation and reduce pressure on both families and the health system.

Congratulations to the award recipients on this well-earned recognition, and to all finalists and palliative care volunteers and teams for their ongoing compassion, resilience, and generosity in making such a meaningful difference.

National Volunteer Week 2026 (18โ€“24 May) is a time to recognise, celebrate and thank all of the incredible volunteers across Australia. This yearโ€™s theme, Your Year to Volunteer, honours the invaluable contributions volunteers make every day, and encourages more people to make 2026 the year they get involved and make a real difference.

As part of this special week, Palliative Care NSW is proud to host the 2026 NSW Palliative Care Volunteer of the Year Awards on Wednesday 20 May, recognising the outstanding dedication and impact of palliative care volunteers.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Where is palliative care provided?

Palliative care can be accessed in a range of settings, to help people with a life-limiting illness to live as well as they can and as comfortably as they can, right to the very end.

This may include:
๐Ÿ”ธA general practice or primary health care clinic
๐Ÿ”ธA personโ€™s home, including residential aged care
๐Ÿ”ธA palliative care outpatient service
๐Ÿ”ธIn hospital
๐Ÿ”ธIn a dedicated palliative care unit or hospice

Ideally, and where possible, palliative care is provided wherever a person and their family feel most comfortable. Starting conversations early can help meet your preferences for care.
