Out for Australia are deeply saddened by the passing of our Emeritus Patron, Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO.

Dame Marie was a trailblazing leader in Australian public life and a distinguished psychiatrist, remembered for her dignity, compassion, lifelong service, and steadfast allyship of the LGBTIQ+ community.

Dame Marie served as Governor of New South Wales from 2001 to 2014, and her contribution to mental health, education, and social inclusion will be felt for generations.

We were honoured when Dame Marie accepted our invitation to become our inaugural Patron at our national launch at NSW Parliament House in March 2015, lending her voice and leadership to our mission of mentoring, visible role models, and community for young LGBTIQ+ people.

Everyone at Out for Australia extends our heartfelt condolences to Dame Marie’s family and loved ones, and to all who were inspired by her remarkable life.

Kim is a celebrated artist and seven-time Archibald finalist, creating paintings of icons & allies within the LGBTQIA community.
