Soroptimists members lead the change!, Soroptimist International South East Asia Pacific (SISEAP) programme and action work addresses 8 objectives, todays post looks at the incredible work of clubs which won best practice awards for their Environment Actions..
For Soroptimists, environmental advocacy is never just about the planet, it is about people, equity, and education.
From the sewing tables to community composts, recycling, clean up days, swap meets, replanting of trees and mangroves, these and other projects fund a larger vision. Every bit of waste we divert, and every piece of land we protect, directly supports our broader global goals: advocating for resource protection, promoting proper hygiene and sanitation, and funding clean water projects and school toilets.
Thank you to our incredible members for leading the change!
WINNER: SI North Shore
Project: Sewn Up: Sustainable Sewing for Skills, Confidence & Textile Waste Reduction
A brilliant 3-month community initiative equipping women with practical skills in garment repair, alteration, and upcycling, while educating them on the harsh realities of fast fashion.
Why it matters to Soroptimists: This project strikes at the heart of our mission. It doesn't just divert textile waste from landfills; it empowers women with tangible, transferable skills, builds their confidence, and fosters mindful consumption. It’s a low-cost, highly replicable model of social and environmental impact.
HIGHLY COMMENDED: SI Hobart
Project: Promoting A Clean, Healthy, Sustainable Tasmania
Led a powerful community movement centered on recycling, composting, responsible consumption, and heavy collaboration with local enterprises to drastically reduce landfill waste.
Why it matters to Soroptimists: True advocacy requires a seat at the table. SI Hobart members didn't just change their personal habits; they actively liaised with key stakeholders through meetings, emails, and phone calls to ensure the integrity of their environmental response. They proved that grassroots Soroptimist leadership can shift community policy and behavior.
HIGHLY COMMENDED: SI Bayside
Project: Soropti-Swap
What they did: Created an interactive event designed to swap both materials and ideas. It combined awareness with immediate action, offering the community free alteration training and demonstrations on how to remake old textiles into new treasures.
Why it matters to Soroptimists: Education is our greatest tool. By combining hands-on participation with sustainable education, SI Bayside demystified waste reduction. They created a supportive space where the community could learn to reject the "throwaway" culture, protecting our land resources one garment at a time.
