The White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) is a fairly common sight along the coasts and inland rivers of Australia, as well as further afield. Even as our second largest raptor, little is known about their complete breeding cycle, from nest building to fledging. The huge nest of large sticks is commonly placed in a high tree and the nest may be used

for many years in succession. The Parramatta River Sea-Eagles are often seen during the day on their prominent mangrove perch, loafing or feeding on a mullet or other fish from the wetlands. They may also be seen soaring overhead on up-swept wings. The nest is placed high in an Iron Bark tree in the Newington Nature Reserve and has been used by a succession of Sea-Eagles over the years. Each year the nest has been monitored and valuable observations made. Volunteers from the BirdLife Australia Southern NSW, Discovery Centre placed cameras high in the nest tree. This will provide a wonderful opportunity to closely monitor breeding behaviour at the nest. Eagle Watch continues and anyone visiting the Discovery Centre during opening times on weekends may watch the live action as well as recordings of previous interesting behaviour. June 1: eagles were awake at first light with a series of duets, then mating - and off. More sticks and leafy branches were brought in and Dad was again seen carrying a small stick in his beak. The bowl is looking very green and leafy. Just after 12 Dad came in with a nice –sized fish, which was claimed shortly after by Lady and taken to eat on the branch- an Eel-tailed Catfish. Both were away returning later in the afternoon with sticks and leaves and another mating. Then away and back early evening .

May 31 : eagles were away last night, and in the morning Dad flew home just after 8am with a stick, closely followed by Lady. A little nest work together, then Dad off again. Back again after 9am Lady with some leaves – both working in the bowl. During the day they both brought in leaves and sticks from time to time and there were several matings. Just before 3pm Dad brought a headless bream – ate a little himself, then Lady claimed shortly after. Several more matings – then he turned up with a big whole mullet –still flapping. Lady ate very well today. Dad came back and continued eating the mullet she left on the branch

May 29: A little disturbance last night just after 1am, with a duet, then settled again. Early morning start with duets and a mating, a stick from Dad then away. They were away all day then until around 2pm, both bringing in sticks -and a mating nearby. Then away again. 3:30 they were at Goat Island and flying together shortly after. Then after 4pm, not seen there. Dad arrived home just before 5pm with a whole fish – followed shortly after by Lady to claim it and start eating. She finished it all, then a little nest work. And a last brief evening mating before settling for the night..

May 28: Last night was quieter, though possums passed by. The day started with a wet nest and an early duet. Then off for a while, returning around 10am with sticks. Both appeared to have eaten. Dad brought 5 sticks during the morning and lady 1, then off again. They were heard and seen at Goat Island mid- afternoon. A wet day, and the river is muddy and high. Late afternoon they were still at Goat Island – and with duets heard several times. Then at dark they both turned up at the nest. Home for the night.

May 27: Powerful owl disturbed them again last night, eagles alert. Possums still under the nest. Awake very early with duets and mating, then early stick work. More sticks during the morning, in and out. Dad brought 10 sticks and Lady 3 –some quite leafy branches. Mid-afternoon, both turned up at Goat Island. They left together just after 4pm and arrived at the nest at 4:16 – Dad first, with a fish, followed by Lady. She took the fish to the branch to eat – possibly a flounder. Both then left again. He returned with a stick, followed by Lady. Then another - a busy day. A final mating before settling for the night.

Dad returned for a little nest maintenance. Both settled then for the night.

May 25: last evening a Powerful Owl landed close to the nest alarming Lady, who chased it off. Eagles were awake early in the morning, with a duet and mating. Both brought early sticks, then away. Lady returned with a leafy branch just before 10am, closely followed by Dad with a stick. Raining at the nest. Shortly after a duet and mating close by. Off, then another stick after about an hour. Dad returned with a headless bream just before 2pm. He waited some time – no Lady – then took it and ate a little more, before returning it to the nest again. Lady returned after 4pm but left the fish there – she appears to have eaten elsewhere. Then Dad returned and claimed it –taking it to the branch to eat. When Lady returned later, there was a mating and later they settled for the night. Today was busy – Dad brought 11 offerings and Lady 3. He was seen carrying a stick in his bill again – unusual.

May 24: eagles were awake early with duets and mating by the tree, then off. One at least was seen at Goat Island around 8:30. Just after 10am Dad flew in with a fish – head eaten. He looked around for Lady, left, then came back with some dead leaves. He returned again with a really long stick, which he struggled to place, then dropped off the edge. Then back with another very long stick and a couple more soon after. Then away for some time. He returned after 4pm looking at that fish….picked it, brought it back. Then Lady came in and claimed it, feeding well. Both then came to the nest for some renovation, chewing in the bowl leafy lining. Both eventually moved up the branch, with Lady adopting head bowed invitation – and mating. Then settled for the night.
