Palms International Volunteering

Palms International Volunteering Palms recruits qualified Australians to assist sustainable community development through mentoring.

Palms Australia creates sustainable solutions to poverty through long-term, professional mentoring placements in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. For corporate partners we offer quality training courses in cross-cultural communication and preparation to work in low income countries and remote areas. This month's Palms Post is out and it marks 65 years of Palms volunteers serving overseas. Returnees stretching back to 1962 reflect on what their placements meant to them, a partner bishop in PNG shares his memory of one of them, and current volunteers in Timor-Leste and the Philippines bring us up to date from the field.

There's also our new Simplicity September campaign, the roles communities have asked us to fill, and a chance to stand with Palms before 30 June.

Read it at the link in our bio, and if it moves you, please pass it on. Stories like these travel one share at a time.

There are plenty of ways to give love. Here is one that happens to be tax deductible.

A donation to Palms International Volunteering does something specific. It helps a skilled Australian go and share exactly the skills a community has asked for. Not what we decided they needed. What they did.

Right now Permatil in Timor-Leste has asked for a permaculture organiser to help their community build food security and grow their own future. Your gift helps make placements like this one happen.

Give before the end of the financial year and your gift is tax deductible.

Our Community Health Volunteer at Kadasig, Annie Anthony, sent us this from a six-day camp in Badian:

"The children relaxed and were allowed to be just children, with no responsibilities and care in the world. The smiles on their faces were priceless."

The camp is run annually by the Major Cebu Taskforce, bringing together orphanages and children's homes across Cebu. Kadasig is part of the taskforce and funds their kids to attend each year. New friendships, activities, a 4am bonfire, and mass to close.

Thank you Annie, and thank you Kadasig.

A visit to Balibo is an opportunity to catch up with the skilled and dedicated team at the Community Learning Centre, including hearing about their ongoing Days for Girls program.

It is also an opportunity to reflect on history and the resilience of the Timorese people. After visiting the Australian Flag House, going through the Balibo Fort Veterans Museum and watching the Balibo film onsite, the 2026 Palms Encounter Tour participants walked the Sacred Way to reflect on the power of faith and forgiveness in the Timorese journey of overcoming trauma and creating their future.

It seems fitting that today the Palms Encounter group were all able to celebrate Pentecost with a Mass in Gleno, Timor Leste. There is surely no greater example of the strength of the Church and the reach of the Holy Spirit than the faith of the people of Timor Leste.

Thank you to the volunteers, alumni, partners, and supporters who've shaped this work across 65 years.

One more thing. We're running a small pilot in September around the theme of living simply. Returned volunteers have been telling us for decades that the most lasting change they bring home is a different relationship with what they actually need.

We're building something around that idea.

Watch this space.

The most useful question we ask isn't "what can we offer?" It's "what have you asked for?"

Partner communities aren't recipients. They're the architects of their own development. When they tell us what they need, we listen, and then we look for the Australian with the right skills to walk alongside them.

That's not a slogan. It's been the working method for 65 years.

This National Volunteers Week – Palms is offering an opportunity to meet two of our long term volunteers for a live Q&A direct from Timor-Leste.

Date: Tonight, Thursday 21st May 2026
Time: 4pm AEST

Three roles open right now where the skills are hard to find.

IT teaching at Saint Paul Institute in Cambodia. Finance and audit work with the Diocese of Kundiawa in Papua New Guinea. Small business and marketing mentoring with Nazareth Foundation in Timor-Leste.

All three came from the partner community. All three are real positions where someone with the right background can make a meaningful contribution over a year or two.

Meet Michele, whose 8-year journey with Palms in Timor-Leste transformed an entire community through skills-sharing and dedication. From providing clean water to 30+ kindergartens to mentoring local leaders, one person's commitment can create generations of impact.

That's what skilled international volunteering looks like. Showing up. Listening. Sharing what you know. Being changed in the p

If that sounds like a conversation worth having, join us for the Information Session this Thursday May 21st, 4pm AEST with a live cross from Timor-Leste. Register link in bio.
