Palms International Volunteering

Palms International Volunteering Palms recruits qualified Australians to assist sustainable community development through mentoring.

Palms Australia creates sustainable solutions to poverty through long-term, professional mentoring placements in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. For corporate partners we offer quality training courses in cross-cultural communication and preparation to work in low income countries and remote areas. Here's the whole thing.

Pick one thing you do without thinking about it. Leave it out for September. Ask the people around you to sponsor you for doing it.

One thing, thirty days. That's the challenge.

If deciding what to give up is the hard part, we've made a shortlist. Coffee. Takeaway. Social media. Streaming. The same simple meal every day. Or nothing new for the month.

Every dollar supports Palms International Volunteering, working alongside local colleagues in Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Kiribati, Cambodia, the Philippines and South Africa. Sixty-five years of it.

Register at simplicityseptember.org.au. Starts Tuesday.

We are all deeply saddened at the lost of another Palms stalwart, Peter Cassidy, who passed away suddenly last week.
Peter and Margaret Cassidy have truly lived the Palms values of solidarity and sustainability, walking humbly as serial volunteers and supporters. Combining education and community development, Peter and Margaret served in schools of the Dominican Sisters at Nila, Solomon Islands in 2004. Then in 2017 headed to the Bedois Parish in Timor Leste, becoming key partners in the continued development of St Therese's School.

All our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret and their family at this sad time. May God hold Peter in the hollow of His hand.
Rest peacefully Peter.

Simplicity September starts on the first.

Choose one way to live a little more simply and keep it for the month. Grow something. Make instead of buy. One evening a week without a screen. Walk instead of drive. Spend less and give the difference. The goal is yours to set, and it should be something you would actually keep.

This is for individuals, for families doing it together at home, for schools taking it on as a class or a whole community, and for workplaces looking for something restorative for their teams.

Then ask people to sponsor you for doing it. Every dollar supports communities across the Pacific, Asia and Africa who have asked Palms for skilled people rather than programs or goods.

The idea came from our returned participants. Almost everyone comes home living more simply after two years alongside local colleagues for whom growing, making, mending and sharing was simply how life worked. Not going without. Just a different way of living.

Everything else lives on the Simplicity September page,
Ideas, prompts and how people are getting on through the month.

September is two weeks away, and we'd love you to spend it with us.

Simplicity September invites you to choose one simple living exercise for the month. Cooking with what's already in the cupboard. A pause on buying anything new. Screen-free evenings. You pick something that fits your life, invite friends and family to sponsor you, and take time each week to notice what changes.

The funds raised support Palms International volunteers sharing skills with communities across the Pacific, Asia and Africa, at those communities' request.

Choose your exercise and set up your page at simplicityseptember.org.au

Fourteen kilometres. One Heartbreak Hill. Over $700 raised for Palms International Volunteering.

Anne Tunks took on this year's City2Surf for us, and every dollar she raised goes towards preparing and sending skilled Australians to work alongside local colleagues in communities that have asked for them.

Not programs. Not goods. People, prepared properly and supported for the long haul.

Congratulations Anne, and thank you!

September is nearly here.

Simplicity September begins in three weeks, and there's still time to choose your exercise and set up your page. Whether you're joining as an individual, a family or a school community, the invitation is the same: live simply for one month, reflect on what you discover, and raise support for communities partnering with Palms volunteers across the Pacific, Asia and Africa.

Simplicity isn't about going without. It's about making room.

Another placement begins. Maggie Stevenson has arrived in Timor-Leste and is settling into her role as Kindergarten and English Teacher Mentor in Ainaro.

Maggie brings deep experience in early childhood education, including designing learning environments and supporting teachers and trainers. And Timor-Leste is far from new to her. She has returned several times over the years, drawn back by the communities and relationships that make this country such a significant part of the Palms story.

We're delighted Maggie is now part of that continuing relationship, and we wish her every blessing as her assignment begins.

Final call for our September Orientation Course.

If volunteering overseas has been sitting in the back of your mind for months or even years, holding off is understandable. It's a big step. But the Orientation Course isn't a commitment to go. It's the space to properly explore the question, with people who've asked it themselves.

Communities in Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and across the Pacific, Asia and Africa are requesting skills you may already have.

Some placements are a return rather than a beginning.

Les Hartwig is taking up the role of Station Manager at [Mingende] Station in Papua New Guinea. He and his wife Norelle have spent much of their lives in PNG, and Les previously served with Palms in Mount Hagen in 2016, mentoring a local Fleet Manager. His experience across decades of PNG life, before and after independence, is exactly the kind of deep familiarity that makes a placement flourish.

Palms volunteers have been living and working alongside communities in PNG for over sixty years. Les rejoins that long story, and we wish him well.
