We are excited to welcome Stephen Ormandy to the Sydney Collage Society in 2026.

Stephen is an Australian artist and designer whose practice is grounded in the language of collage—assembling, layering, and reconfiguring shape, colour, and form to create rhythm and visual tension. Working intuitively from the subconscious, his compositions explore the balance of positive and negative space, often hovering between abstraction and figuration.

Across painting, analogue collage, and sculpture, Ormandy treats form as something built and activated, pushing collage beyond the page into an expanded contemporary practice. With decades of international recognition, including exhibitions in New York, London, Milan, Sydney, and Seoul, his work is held in major public collections such as the National Gallery of Victoria, the Powerhouse Museum, Artbank, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

In our latest Downtime Interview, we speak with American collage artist Jack Felice, whose ten-year analogue practice embraces experimentation, imperfection, and the quiet therapy of making.

Based in Tallahassee, Florida, Jack is drawn to the tactile connection of physical collage and the thrill of discovering source material that sparks new work. Influenced by Henri Matisse, Francis Bacon, David Lynch and the poetry of John Ashbery, his work balances intuition with emotional depth.

Recently, Jack released a new book of his collages in collaboration with designer and fellow collage artist John Gall.

Here is our latest work for 125 Years of Federation — Many Stories. One Cumberland.

The challenge was to create a hero illustration and heritage trail map for the 125 Years of Federation program, forming a cohesive visual identity that honours local history while reflecting the diversity of Cumberland today.

Layering landmarks, community spaces and symbols like the flannel flower, the work reframes Federation as a lived, local experience — shaped by migration, industry, landscape and gathering. Background forms draw from Cumberland’s topographic contours, grounding the identity physically in place.

Designed to scale across teardrop flags, print and digital platforms, the hero artwork is paired with a heritage trail map featuring iconic sites in the area plus a bespoke collage kit was also developed to support a community workshop, extending the visual language into a hands-on, participatory experience.

‘Folded Light’ by SCS artist Steve Tierney opens tonight at Clifton School of Arts, with the exhibition running until 16 February 2026.

From the artist:

Folded Light presents new artworks by Steve Tierney that explore the human figure through collage. Built from layers of torn paper, colour, and photographic imagery, the reassembled images transform familiar bodies into abstract compositions. The figures feel both present and unsettled, drawing attention to what is shown, what is hidden, and what feels exposed.

The works in Folded Light reflect on how we see ourselves and others. By cutting and rebuilding the human form, Tierney creates space for vulnerability, ambiguity, and reflection. Meaning emerges not only from what is visible, but from what is altered or left incomplete.

Alongside the new works, the exhibition includes a small selection of earlier pieces, offering an introduction for viewers who are new to Tierney’s practice.

Artist talk and Q&A Saturday 14th February with Lily Guest ( .guest.gallery ) 1 - 2pm.

In our latest Downtime Interview, we speak with Sydney based artist Freya Jobbins, whose analogue collage practice has evolved over more than two decades. Working across collage, assemblage, imagery and installation, Freya is deeply committed to the democratic, non-elitist nature of collage — a medium she champions for its accessibility, sustainability and immediacy. Drawing on found materials sourced largely from charity shops, her work reanimates discarded images through acts of appropriation, subversion and re-assembly.
