Association of Veteran Surfers AVS is a Surfing Queensland affiliated Boardriders club founded by veterans with the vision of a healthy and active su***de free veteran community.

After 10 years of service, we have made the decision to close Association of Veteran Surfers Gold Coast (AVS), with operations concluding on 16th April 2026.

This has not been a decision taken lightly. Over the past decade, AVS has grown from a small idea into a community of people committed to enrich the lives of veterans and their families through surfing and mateship. Together, we have helped countless veterans and their families learn to surf, delivered Learn to Surf and Surfing High Performance coaching sessions and contributed to helping veterans connect with like-minded individuals through surfing.

The Battle On The Break event is something we are extemely proud to have implemented for the past 3 years and hope the event continues for many more to come.

We are proud to have been a part of the veteran community for 10 years and wish the other AVS Chapters all the best in the future.

We are deeply grateful to the volunteers, supporters, partners, and past and current board members who have given their time, energy, and belief to this work. The impact of your contribution extends far beyond what can be measured. A special shoutout to the following for being with us from the very beginning and always happy to put their hand up and help out Scotchy, Ken Campbell, Gav Bellis, Justin Nicholls, Adam Cross, Gareth Fallows, Matty Sawyer and everyone else who has supported AVS throughout the years.

Lastly, but most importantly a huge thank you to Kirra Surfriders for helping us get established in the Boardriders community and allowing us to surf in events such as the Kirra Teams Challenge, Straddie Assault and Australian Boardriders Battle. Also, thank you to the boardriders community for accepting us with open arms and making us feel welcome at all events.

As we close this chapter, we do so with pride in what has been achieved and confidence that the work will continue in different ways across the community.

Battle On The Break 2025

And just like that the 3rd BOTB has come and gone.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped out and made the event possible.
for assisting with the grant application through Health and Wellbeing grants to for organising the catering and some funds. President Matt Tyler and Huggo for helping get the event running and the pictures and videos for us.

Sydney for the amazing venue and hosting us.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

This years event was the biggest and best yet. We had 7 hours of private pool hire so the kids and families could have a crack at the Waves.
We had 54 competitors and numerous free surfers come along and enjoy the event.

We were stoked to see everyone at the event and cant wait to do it again next year.

Congrats to Team AVS on the win and the 3-peat 🏆🏆🏆 and the individuals who took out the top spots in each division.

Hi All,

Update: Battle On The Break
URBNSURF Sydney
22nd/23rd November 2025

Dates are definitely locked in and we will have the pool for 2 hours Saturday night, 4-5 hours Sunday morning.

2-3 hours Sunday will be comp with 2 hours set aside for free surfing and a chance for family members to have surf if they wish, some learn to surf sessions will be available also.

Saturday night will be 2 hours of free surfing to get used to the wave before Sunday's comp.

The park is in Sydney Olympic Park so best look for accommodation around there or an AirBNB is Wentworth point.

We are still working on comp format and the finer details. Will get them to you at a later date.

Let me know if you intend on coming so we can get an idea on numbers.

ANZAC Day 2024

We had the privilege of spending the morning with for their annual Aus VS NZ surf comp... they invited us to enter a veteran team in the event.

Sun was shining, surf was pumping and the crew had a great morning.

Thanks everyone who turned up and thanks to Burleigh for the invite. We look forward to next year and making this an annual thing for AVS Gold Coast.

Successful day for the AVS team at the 40th Annual Kirra Teams Challenge

took a 3rd in his heat

(Flips Nephew) taking the big win in his heat with some great surfing and the clubs first ever heat win 🏆
cox taking a 2nd in his heat in our last heat of the day.

So pumped with how the day went and sitting equal 4th on the ladder with some amazing clubs.

Massive thanks to Kai and Kalani for representing the club and doing us all proud.
