Today is War Widows Day 2026

We honour Australia's war widows, women who have carried the lifelong cost of their partners' service, rebuilt their lives after loss and held their families and communities together.

More than 28,000 war widows and widowers live across Australia today. This year, the of Veterans Guild marks 80 years of standing beside them, and we're proud to stand with them too.

The Botany RSL Sub-Branch warmly invites our local community to join us as we come together to honour and remember the brave men and women who have served our nation.

Earlier this week, members of our sub-Branch were honoured to be invited to Canberra by our local Member, Matt Thistlethwaite MP, for a behind-the-scenes visit to Parliament House.

A highlight was our catch-up with the Minister for Defence, the Hon. Richard Marles MP. He was generous with his time, and left us with a line that stayed with the group: that veterans are always willing to give more than Australia asks. It said a great deal about what our community, and those currently serving, mean to him.

Matt and his team showed us through the building before we attended Question Time. Sitting in the chamber, watching the debate that shapes veterans' policy, is a very different experience from reading about it afterwards.

That evening we moved on to the Australian War Memorial to take part in the sunset ceremony. It was a moving commemoration of those who have gone before us, and a reminder of the price of freedom. We returned the following morning for a tour of the Memorial.

A wonderful day for the Botany RSL Sub-Branch and our members.

A big thank you to Matt Thistlethwaite MP for inviting our members to Parliament House in Canberra today and giving us the opportunity to meet with the Minister for Defence.

It was a fantastic experience for our members and a day many will remember for a long time. We greatly appreciate Matt’s ongoing support of our veterans, their families and the Botany RSL Sub-Branch.

Today, members of the Botany RSL Sub-Branch had the privilege of joining the veteran community to farewell a truly remarkable Australian, Reg Chard OAM — the last surviving veteran of the Kokoda campaign.

Reg represented a generation whose courage, sacrifice and service helped shape the Australia we know today. But his legacy extended far beyond his wartime service.

Through his willingness to share his experiences, particularly with younger generations, Reg ensured the lessons, mateship and spirit of Kokoda would continue long after him.

For our members, it was an honour to stand alongside fellow veterans, serving members, RSL representatives, Reg’s family and the wider community to pay our respects and say farewell.

Rest easy, Reg. Your duty is done, but your story will continue to be told.
