The Australian Society of Anaesthetists

The Australian Society of Anaesthetists Supporting, representing and educating Australia’s anaesthetists since 1934.

The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) was founded in 1934 as a voluntary association of members practicing anaesthesia throughout Australia. The ASA effectively promotes and protects the status, independence and best interests of Australian anaesthetists with its principal foci being the economic, workforce and professional interests of anaesthetists. This is achieved through negotiations

with state and federal health departments and associated medical bodies, the development of policy and the publication of guidelines. The Society, jointly with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), provides representatives to Standards Australia, Medical Services Advisory Committee and the Professional Services Review Committee. The ASA's publications include the international peer review scientific journal, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, the ASA news and the Relative Value Guide. It conducts an annual National Scientific Congress, and in conjunction with ANZCA provides Continuing Medical Education events at individual state and territory levels. https://iamonline.org.au/

Australia and Solomon Islands partner to strengthen Anaesthesia and save the lives of mothers and babies.

Australia is working with Solomon Islands to improve anaesthetic care and outcomes for both mothers and babies.

A team from the Australian Society of Anaesthetists joined specialists at the National Referral Hospital to deliver an intensive four-day paediatric anaesthesia training. This builds on a long-standing partnership to develop a skilled, sustainable anaesthesia workforce.

Safe, timely anaesthesia is critical for life-saving procedures like caesarean sections. With Australia’s support, Solomon Islands’ women doctors are leading the way, strengthening critical care and helping reduce maternal and infant mortality.

Men's Health Week (15th-21st) provides an opportunity to highlight the different ways we can improve men's health, and bring light to the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

Anaesthetists face a number of unique challenges as part of their work, which can result in poor mental health and poor general health.

The stigma surrounding mental illness and su***de in the general public, combined with the value many doctors place on being the giver of care rather then the recipient, can also make it challenging for anaesthetists to seek help when they need it.

The ASA provides wellbeing resources to members and encourages anaesthetists to implement long-term changes to their workplaces.
