This NSW Public Education Week, we're celebrating the experiences that help young people discover their strengths, build confidence and shape their future.

For Hassan from Western Sydney, his Duke of Ed experience showed him the power of setting goals and taking on new challenges.

“Goal setting was huge. Whenever I sit down now, I think about what I want to achieve, not just doing something for the sake of it... Without the Duke of Ed, I would still be wondering what I wanted to do in the future.”

Today Hassan is studying biomedical science at university, working part time supporting other Duke of Ed students and running a photography business inspired by his Duke of Ed skill activity.​

His story is a reminder that the skills young people develop today can open doors to opportunities they may not have imagined.

This NSW Public Education Week, we're celebrating the educators, school leaders and communities who inspire excellence in young people every day.

Excellence isn't just about academic achievement. It's about building confidence, resilience, leadership and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

We're proud to work alongside a growing number of public schools across NSW, helping students develop life skills beyond the classroom, through the Duke of Ed. From volunteering and learning new skills to physical recreation and adventurous journeys, every challenge helps young people realise what they're capable of.

Behind every young person who achieves their Duke of Ed is a dedicated Duke of Ed Leader. Their encouragement, guidance and belief in their students help them discover new strengths, embrace challenges and grow into confident, capable young adults.

Through this partnership, anyone completing a Duke of Ed Level can make a real difference by helping bridge Australia's digital divide. Gain hands-on experience in tech recovery, device refurbishment, data handling and community redistribution. Learn how technology can be a force for equity, sustainability, and real-world change.

As a national organisation, Techie Australia redistributes donated technology to people who need it most, while helping Duke of Ed achievers build valuable skills and contribute to stronger, more connected communities.

Every Duke of Ed journey is unique. However, the lessons learned along the way are often the same. 🌟

From Sophie’s story with Sailability Manly we shared earlier this week to this reflection on another personal Duke of Ed experience, these stories are a reminder that stepping outside your comfort zone is where some of the greatest growth happens.

Through the Duke of Ed, young people challenge themselves to try new things, persevere through difficulties, build confidence and develop skills that stay with them well beyond their time at school.

A Duke of Ed achiever recently shared, “The Duke of Ed has been a really good experience for me because it's pushed me to try new things, stay committed, and get out of my comfort zone a bit. I've learnt a lot, especially about teamwork, responsibility, and not giving up when things get difficult.

"At first, some parts were definitely challenging, but I think that's what makes it worthwhile. It's helped me become more confident and more independent, and I've also had a lot of fun along the way."

We’re incredibly proud to see young people discover what they’re capable of achieving, and are grateful to the families, Duke of Ed Leaders and supporters who encourage and guide them along the way. 💛

Some experiences don't end when you complete them. They shape what comes next.​

Sophie began volunteering with Sailability Manly in Year 9 as part of her Duke of Ed Bronze Level. Four years later, she's completed her Gold Level, been named Sailability Manly's Young Volunteer of the Year, and is still giving back.​

A talented sailor herself, Sophie has helped make sailing more accessible while building leadership, confidence and a deep connection to her community. As she heads to The University of Queensland to study Chemical Engineering and Commerce, she'll continue volunteering with Sailability.​

Sophie's journey is a powerful example of the lasting impact the Duke of Ed can have in inspiring confidence, purpose and a commitment to making a difference that continues long after a Level is completed.​

​Congratulations, Sophie, and thank you to our Duke 4Sport partner, Sailability Manly, for creating opportunities that help young people thrive.​

✈️ New partnership taking flight

We’re excited to welcome Airways Aviation - Australia as our first non-tertiary education partner.

Through Airways Aviation’s Online Learning Platform, AMELIA (Airways Management Education Learning Innovation Academy), which includes the online Pilot Foundation Course and flight training programs, young people can now have their aviation learning recognised towards their Duke of Ed Skills Section.

Beyond technical skills, aviation develops confidence, resilience, decision making and problem-solving - qualities that support young people in the cockpit and beyond.

Airways Aviation CEO Janet Dalby said:
“Learning to fly is about much more than acquiring technical skills. It challenges young people to develop confidence, responsibility, perseverance and critical thinking qualities that extend beyond the cockpit and support lifelong learning and career growth.”

Yesterday, Duke of Ed WA Board Chair Dan Madden, together with CEO Helen White and WA State Manager Sean Moring, met with our Patrons, His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM and Mrs Dawson, at Government House in Perth.

The meeting highlighted the continued growth and positive impact of the Duke of Ed across Western Australia, particularly in public schools, with disadvantaged youth and in rural and regional communities.

We look forward to celebrating our latest group of achievers at the Duke of Ed Gold Level Reception, to be held at Government House on 25 September.
