What does credible product sustainability look like?

It starts with transparency.

As scrutiny of sustainability claims continues to grow, manufacturers, specifiers and procurement professionals need greater confidence in the products they choose and promote.

That's why GECA and Living Future Oceania have partnered to make it easier for organisations to pursue two complementary certifications that support healthier materials, responsible production and greater supply chain transparency.

Together, GECA ecolabel certification and the Declare label provide a more holistic picture of product sustainability — helping manufacturers demonstrate leadership while giving project teams greater confidence in their decisions.

As part of the partnership, organisations pursuing both certifications can access a 10% discount on first-year certification fees.

Together, we're helping drive a future where sustainability claims are backed by transparency, accountability and independent verification.

What does 10 years of independent certification teach you about sustainable design?

As District marks a decade of GECA certification, Sustainability Lead Vanessa Masson reflects on how the industry has evolved, why transparency matters more than ever, and what comes next for circular design.

One reflection that stood out to us:
“Sustainability is a collective effort that spans every department in an organisation. You can't silo this work.”

From changing customer expectations to embedding circularity principles across operations, District’s journey highlights the value of continuous improvement, honest conversations and independently verified claims.

This , we’re celebrating Cult Design on achieving certification under both our Furniture, Fittings, Foam & Mattresses (Level A) and Furniture & Fittings (Level B) standards.

For more than 25 years, Cult has been a leading design destination across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, offering premium furniture, lighting and objects from iconic international and local brands.

Through their Australian design brand, nau, Cult continues to champion authentic, timeless design grounded in quality craftsmanship, responsible manufacturing, and long-term thinking.

As Cult shared in a recent sustainability feature:
“Sustainability is not an addition, but an ongoing commitment embedded within how we design, source and specify.”

Their GECA certified products have been independently assessed against rigorous environmental, human health and social impact criteria across the full product lifecycle — from material selection and manufacturing through to longevity and end-of-life considerations.

Importantly, certified products can also contribute to Responsible Product Value (RPV) points under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star rating system, helping architects, designers and specifiers make more confident, credible sustainability decisions.

Because great design should deliver healthier interiors, greater transparency, and better outcomes for people and planet.

Congratulations again to the Cult Design team on this fantastic achievement.

How do we know if recycled content claims are actually accurate? ♻️

As scrutiny around environmental claims continues to grow, businesses are under increasing pressure to provide credible, transparent and evidence-based sustainability information.

In our latest article, we explore why verified recycled content is becoming essential for:
✔️ circular procurement
✔️ ESG reporting
✔️ reducing greenwashing risk
✔️ building stakeholder trust

We also introduce GECA and Rebuilt’s new Recycled Content Verification (RCV) tool, designed to help organisations substantiate recycled content claims with credible, third-party verified data.

New Australian research suggests many environmental claims on supermarket products are still more marketing than meaningful sustainability action.

Researchers surveyed more than 27,000 products and found that terms like “natural” and “sustainable” were often self-declared by manufacturers and lacked independent verification.

At the same time, consumers are demanding greater transparency from brands. A recent study published in the Journal of Business Research found that:

• 75% of consumers consider transparency important
• 2 in 3 consumers are willing to switch brands based on how transparently companies operate

Consumers want sustainability claims they can trust.

That’s why independent third-party verification matters.

GECA’s Claim Authenticated mark helps organisations substantiate environmental claims through a rigorous independent review process aligned with internationally recognised ISO 14021 principles.

By verifying that claims are accurate, specific, and evidence-based, businesses can:

âś” Build consumer trust
âś” Reduce greenwashing risks
âś” Strengthen brand credibility
âś” Demonstrate genuine impact

In a complex and evolving sustainability landscape, trust matters.

For District, independent certification has played an important role in helping customers navigate sustainability claims with confidence.

As Vanessa Masson, Sustainability Lead at District, explains:
“Third-party certification provides our clients with the confidence that our products have undergone thorough checks and meet stringent sustainability criteria.”

Over the past 10 years, GECA certification has helped support transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making across

District’s certified product range.

Because sustainability shouldn’t rely on claims alone.
