NSW needs an independent Child Safety and Wellbeing Commission to strengthen protection and support for children in the child protection system.

NSW continues to record the highest rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in out-of-home care. A Commission will help keep our children with their families and communities, connected to Country and culture.

Countless reports and inquires highlight systemic failings and confirm existing accountability mechanisms are inadequate. AbSec stands with a coalition of legal, child welfare and social service organisations calling for an independent Commission to improve the safety and wellbeing of all children in NSW.

Critically, this body can be a trusted place for families and communities to raise concerns, make complaints and challenge decisions, independent of the government agencies that have the power to remove children.

Government intervention in the lives of children and families can be traumatic and deeply harmful. Comprehensive, independent accountability and oversight is crucial. We urge the NSW Government to take this opportunity to work with us to protect the rights and wellbeing of children and their families.

Reconciliation must be measured in children kept with family. πŸ–€

This National Reconciliation Week, AbSec is calling for action that keeps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children safe, connected to family, culture and Country.
Real reconciliation requires governments to fully invest in Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), fully implement the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle, and strengthen early intervention and family preservation supports.

When Aboriginal children grow up strong in identity and surrounded by community, they thrive.

AbSec continues to call for:
πŸ‘£ Full implementation of the Child Placement Principle
πŸ§‘πŸΎβ€πŸ§‘πŸ½β€πŸ§’πŸ½ Greater investment in Aboriginal-led family support
🀝 Genuine Aboriginal community decision-making authority
βš–οΈ An independent Child Safety and Wellbeing Commission to strengthen accountability across the child protection system

Real change requires systemic reform led by Aboriginal communities.

Today we remember. We honour. We commit.

On National Sorry Day, we pause to reflect on the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations and acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

While apologies recognise past wrongs, meaningful change requires ongoing, concrete action.

Apologies must be accompanied by sustained efforts to address imbalance - words translated into tangible improvements in the lives of First Nations peoples.

β—ΎOver-Representation in Child Protection: As of September 2025, 4.5% of First Nations children were on care and protection orders, unchanged from the same time last year. In contrast, the rate for non-Indigenous children declined from 0.5 to 0.4% during this period. (DCJ)

β—ΎFamily Violence: In 2023-24, Indigenous women aged 15 and over were 27 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence than non-Indigenous women. (AIHW)

β—ΎChild Safety Concerns: Indigenous children are over-represented in areas where child safety and security are compromised, experiencing higher rates of hospitalisations and deaths due to injury compared to their non-Indigenous peers.

These figures underscore the necessity for systemic reforms and community-led initiatives.

For Aboriginal children and young people, sorry means listening, and action toward systemic change.

The Leaving Care Hub is now LIVE!

AbSec is proud to launch the Leaving Care Hub: Life After the System β€” a free, practical online resource built with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people preparing to leave out-of-home care.

Developed as part of the Client Experience Initiative (CEI) – Housing Project, funded by the Aboriginal Housing Office and delivered in partnership with AbSec and Dhiira, the Hub was shaped through extensive co-design workshops and consultation with ACCOs and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people with lived experience of care and leaving care.

The Leaving Care Hub walks young people through every stage of their transition β€” from starting a Leaving Care Plan at age 15, through to housing applications, Centrelink entitlements, accessing care records, healing and wellbeing, and staying connected to family, culture and Country.

The Hub includes information and tools relating to:

🏑 Housing & Priority Housing

πŸ’° Money, payments & grants

πŸ“„ Leaving care planning

πŸ–€ Healing, identity & wellbeing

βš–οΈ Rights & responsibilities

🀝 Support services

βœ” Downloadable checklists & practical resources

The need for this resource is significant and puts clear, practical and culturally safe information directly into the hands of young people, as well as the communities, ACCOs, carers and workers who walk alongside them.

And that’s a wrap on the Youth ✨πŸ”₯

Over the past two days, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people, ACCOs, community and sector partners came together to yarn, connect, learn and lead important conversations about the future of our young people and communities β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€

The energy across both days was deadly β€” full of honesty, laughter, culture, reflection and real talk. From powerful lived experience stories to big conversations about change, the forum created a space where young people felt heard, valued and empowered to speak up.

Day 1 centred the voices and experiences of young people, exploring cultural care, aftercare, restoration, grief and loss, and what needs to change in out-of-home care.

Day 2 brought Mob and ACCOs together to focus on practical solutions, advocacy, system reform, housing pathways for young people leaving care and the importance of intergenerational knowledge sharing.

Huge thank you to everyone who showed up, shared their stories and helped create such a strong and culturally safe space ✨

AbSec is proud to have partnered with Mounty Aboriginal Youth & Community Services to deliver this important event, led by Aboriginal young people and focusing on what matters most to them

Special thanks to NSW Office for Youth MacKillop Family Services Thirriwirri, Youth Action NSW, Act for Kids Cages Foundation and Pastel Foundation for supporting these important conversations.

Shoutout to the amazing Kobie Dee for an electrifying live performance, and our MCs Brendan Fuller and Shayle for bringing the vibes, leadership and care across both days πŸ”₯

Last week, AbSec continued the Evidence to Action: System Gaps and Priorities ACCO Roadshow, bringing together powerful community-led conversations on Wiradjuri Country in Wagga Wagga (12 May 2026) and in Albury City (14 May 2026).

These yarn-ups are informing two significant reports grounded in lived experience across Housing, Justice, Disability, Health and Early Childhood. Across each location, ACCOs, community members and sector leaders are sharing honest insights into what is working, where systems continue to fall short, and what genuine reform must look like to create long term change for there communities.

What continues to stand out is the strength of Aboriginal-led knowledge and the collective commitment to ensuring community voices drive action.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared so openly, and contributed their knowledge, experiences and aspirations for stronger outcomes for Aboriginal children, families and communities.

The roadshow continues next week as the team heads to Kamilaroi Country in Walgett on 26 May 2026. If you haven’t already, register below to join the conversation:
