This week at our transitional housing in Swansea, on Awabakal Country we had a beautiful Smoking Ceremony. This Vinnies site provides support and residency for women and children under 12.

The Smoking Ceremony was done on site by Elder Aunty Cheryl Smith and Pastor Uncle Ray.

Smoking Ceremonies are performed by many First Nation clans across the continent. The smoking of a building or place seeks to rid the area of any bad energy and spirits that may be lingering or attached to people who arrive.

Many of the people we assist, as well as our lived experience staff have experienced significant trauma and pain in their lives - a smoking ceremony can help to cleanse and begin anew.

The impact of having culture infused into our sites cannot be understated, not just for First Nations people, but everyone - as it binds us all together as a part of the lands we live on. Connection is foundational for the Good Works we provide.

💻❤️ BUILDING SKILLS, BUILDING FUTURES — TOGETHER

What a wonderful achievement at the Matthew Talbot Hostel and Ozanam Learning Centre (OLC) in Woolloomooloo!

Over recent weeks, Vinnies volunteers have come together with the management and team at the OLC to support people experiencing homelessness through a practical computer skills program.

Today, we celebrate the participants who have completed the program and received their certificates. 🎓👏

For someone experiencing homelessness, learning new computer skills can mean much more than simply knowing how to use a computer. Digital skills can help people access essential services, communicate with family and support networks, search for employment, complete applications and build confidence for the future.

Importantly, the Matthew Talbot community includes veterans and non-veterans, each with their own story, challenges and hopes for the future.

At Vinnies, we believe everyone deserves dignity, encouragement and the opportunity to move forward. The wonderful work of our volunteers and the OLC team helps create that opportunity every day. 💙

A huge congratulations to all of our graduates, and a sincere thank you to the Vinnies volunteers and OLC management and staff who helped make this initiative possible. 👏🇦🇺

Come have a peek inside the Haberfield Men's Shed.

The Shed is open to everyone to come and enjoy getting busy and chatting. We especially cater for men, retirees, veterans and those living with a mild disability.

Women are welcome to The Shed on Wednesdays.

People can do woodwork, manual arts, upholstery, lots of socialising and finish off with a good feed.

Come and join us.

Our Vinnies staff had a busy time at the recent Sydney Disability Expo.

The expo was a hub of information of disability services, support networks and inclusive employment opportunities in the Sydney region.

We had so many people stop at the St Vincent de Paul Society stall interested in volunteering opportunities, retail queries and also for support from our Vinnies Service Centres.

Next stop - regional NSW. See you there!

Congratulations John Karas, Peter Doris and Denis Walsh on your Papal Blessings.

At St Francis Xavier Cathedral in Wollongong on the Feast Day of St Vincent de Paul, Bishop Brian presented on behalf of St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, Papal Blessings to these three very long-term members who have made significant contributions to the Society.

The day was a wonderful celebration of the Feast Day of St Vincent de Paul and a reminder that our founder Frederic Ozanam showed us how an ordinary person can accomplish extraordinary things.

Thank you for all you have done and continue to do, John, Peter and Denis.

Congratulations to Campbell Graham on being awarded the Ken Stephen Medal in recognition of his contribution off the footy field in the community.

Campbell has volunteered with the Vinnies Vans in Sydney for a number of years, regularly serving meals and spending time with people facing hardship.

Receiving the honour at the NRL’s Dally M Awards last night, Campbell acknowledged Josie Charbel, our Vinnies Vans Manager, and his South Sydney Rabbitohs teammate Jai Arrow, who first invited him to come along for a night on the Vinnies Vans where he has continued to volunteer.

“My only hope is that me continuing to do this work will inspire my younger teammates to follow in my footsteps like I did with you.”

And that's a wrap on three days at The Henty Machinery Field Days. The event is one of the biggest events in the Riverina, with tens of thousands of people attending.

Our Vinnies team from the Riverina area (Wagga Wagga Central Council) and surrounding communities hosted a stall to show some of the work happening across the region from the Vinnies Van, Emergency Relief, Conference Support, Youth Conference work, social justice, NILS, fundraising, schools and community engagement.

For us the event was a reminder of the incredible people behind Vinnies in the Riverina.

Our members and volunteers are people who continue to show up for others. Thank you for making our presence at Henty possible. We couldn't do what we do without you.

Congratulations to Michael Lynch our Social Justice Representative and Member who this year has received amazing recognition for his hard work.

Earlier this year Michael was awarded an OAM and now he has received a Papal Blessing.

Michael dedicates his daily life to helping others. He has been a very active member of the St Vincent de Paul Society for 40 years, assisting those in need and advocating tirelessly on a range of social justice issues – for individuals and the community in general.

Congratulations Michael and thank you for all that you do.

The Feast Day of St Vincent de Paul honours the enduring legacy of the Society’s founder and his example of love, compassion and kindness that continues to inspire the actions of Vincentians around the globe.

St Vincent de Paul’s action paved the way for Frederic Ozanam to establish the Society in post-Revolution Paris and for Charles O’Neill here in New South Wales 145 years ago.

Today, the Vincentian spirit lives on through our members, volunteers and services as we support people in their time of need and work to shape a more just and compassionate society.
