Today we commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Battle of Long Khanh and Operation Overlord.

In 1971, Australia launched Operation Overlord (named after the 1944 invasion of Normandy) to prevent the enemy from interfering with the Australian withdrawal from Vietnam and protect the province's security.

On this day, we reflect on the courage and service of the 60,000 Australians who served in the Vietnam War and commemorate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Every dog has its day, and today is National Military Working Dog Day. 🐶

Military working dogs have supported Australian and allied forces in conflicts and operations around the world since the First World War, serving alongside troops from Korea and Borneo to Vietnam, Afghanistan and beyond.

Today, we recognise the courage, loyalty and dedication of the dogs who have served alongside the Australian Defence Force. We also honour the sacrifice of the military working dogs and handlers who have lost their lives in service. 🧡

On this day in 1916, the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL Australia) was established by veterans determined to support those who had served, and their families.

For 110 years, the RSL has stood for mateship, compassion, and service, advocating for the wellbeing of current and former Australian Defence Force members and preserving the spirit of service in our nation.

Today, we honour the legacy and ongoing mission of the RSL, and all those who have served Australia with dedication and courage.

D-Day was the day that turned the tide of the Second World War.

On 6 June 1944, after years of secret planning, D-Day marked the launch of Operation Overlord, the mission to liberate Nazi-occupied western Europe.

An immense force comprising soldiers, sailors and airmen from 13 Allied nations landed on the beaches of Normandy in France in what remains the largest amphibious operation in military history.

Some 3,200 Australian airmen, sailors and soldiers participated in D-Day operations. Thousands more served in the wider Normandy campaign, and hundreds made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, 82 years later, we remember them and all who fought for freedom and peace.

84 years after Sydney faced one of its most dramatic and little-known wartime moments, the Defence of Sydney Commemoration service was held at the monument named in its honour, sitting above Sydney Harbour on North Head today.

Organised by the Australia Remembers Northern Beaches and North Shore Committee, the service honoured those who served in the defence of Sydney during World War II, and the 19 members of the Royal Australian Navy and the two British sailors who gave their lives.

The 2026 commemoration brought hundreds of people together, including RADM Chris Smith, AM, CSM, RAN - Commander Australian Fleet, and representatives from RSL NSW and RSL NSW sub-Branches across Sydney’s North Shore and Northern Beaches.

RSL NSW Director Brigadier Phillip K.H. Bridie, AM, ADC (Retd.) laid a wreath on behalf of RSL NSW alongside many other wreaths and books from sub-Branches, organisations, community groups and local schools.

The RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Art Competition 2027 is open for entries!

Primary and secondary school students in NSW are encouraged to create a piece of art inspired by this year’s theme, which is The Power of Mateship.

This theme focuses on one of the most meaningful parts of the ANZAC Spirit - looking out for others, standing together, and showing kindness in difficult times.

Share this post with your family, friends, and the young artists in your life to encourage them to get creative and pay tribute to Australia’s servicemen and women.

The RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Art Competition is a collaboration between the NSW Department of Education, Catholic Schools NSW, and Independent Schools NSW.

More information about the theme, how the competition works and how to enter can be found here: https://rslnsw.org.au/artcompetition/

Madeline Lovasz recently walked the Kokoda Track as part of the 2026 Walk with Us Kokoda group from Walk With Us Kokoda. This is her experience.

"I’ve spent the past week trying to think of a word that encapsulates my recent experience hiking the Kokoda Track with Walk With Us Kokoda and World Wide Adventures, funded through RSL NSW Veteran Support Fund.

"The words that come to my mind instantly are: transformative, challenging, cathartic, informative, humbling and rewarding but, I am unable to narrow it down to just one word as it is the combination of all these things that have made this a trip that I will never forget."

Today we remember the service of Australians who fought in the Second Boer War, following the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging on 31 May 1902, which brought the conflict in South Africa to an end.

Between 1899 and 1902, more than 16,000 Australians served in South Africa, demonstrating courage, resilience and endurance in difficult conditions far from home.

The war claimed the lives of more than 1,000 Australians through combat, disease and accidents, while many more returned home carrying the physical and emotional impacts of service.

Today we honour all Australians who served in the Boer War and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Lest we forget. 🌺
