More than 40 years of friendship, community spirit and bridge in Gunnedah. ♣️

Gunnedah Bridge Club began in 1983 when a small group of local women, led by Joan Barr, decided to learn bridge together. Today, the club has 48 members, four directors and a welcoming home at the Gunnedah Band Hall.

Members play on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, support newcomers alongside experienced players, connect with neighbouring clubs through social bridge days and raise funds for causes close to their community.

What happens behind the scenes to make sure your masterpoints are recorded correctly?

As part of their Bridge NSW membership, affiliated clubs receive support from the State Masterpoint Secretary with setting up eligible events, applying ABF regulations and processing results so players receive the points they have earned.

Bridge NSW has also developed a practical handbook for Club Masterpoint Secretaries, with guidance on responsibilities, awards and the ABF Masterpoint Centre.

Where are the biggest opportunities hiding - in slams or part-scores?

In this month’s Kate’s Way, Kate McCallum makes the case for giving competitive bidding the attention it deserves. Roughly 40% of deals are part-scores, while fewer than 10% are slams - so getting those closely contested auctions right can make a significant difference.

Kate shares the principles and partnership agreements she uses to compete confidently, including one recent deal where four of those principles came into play.

Celebrating 100 years - and more than four decades of bridge. 🎉

Roy Hammond reached a remarkable milestone on 19 July, celebrating his 100th birthday. Roy discovered bridge with his wife, Betty, in 1979 and went on to become a founding member of St George Budapest Bridge Club, now Georges River Bridge Club. He also plays regularly at Finesse Bridge Club.

With more than 600 masterpoints, Roy remains a skilled competitor, but it is his friendly manner and enjoyment of the people around the table that have made him such a valued member of the community.

Happy 100th birthday, Roy! Please join us in celebrating this wonderful milestone.

♠️ Would you risk 3NT—or settle safely in diamonds?

At IMPs scoring, bidding a vulnerable game can bring a huge reward. Board 7 of OPL Match 5 put that judgement to the test.

After East overcalled 2♦, some East-West pairs stopped in a partscore. Bruce Neill pushed on to 3NT, with Ted Griffin at the helm. Careful play after the heart lead allowed Ted to make nine tricks for +600 and a gain of 9.71 IMPs.

Martin Brown also brought home 3NT in Division 2, making ten tricks for +630 and 11 IMPs.

As Derrick Browne writes: “Veteran risk assessors know to be bullish when bidding vulnerable games at IMPs scoring.”

A wonderful first step into congress bridge!

Congratulations to the 36 pairs who took part in the inaugural Bridge NSW Starter Congress at Peninsula Bridge Club.

For many, it was their first congress, and the relaxed format, short matches and supportive atmosphere helped players build confidence, make new friends and enjoy their introduction to tournament bridge.

A big thank you to organiser Sachiko Cathcart, Peninsula Bridge Club and everyone who helped make the day such a success.
