Every surgery begins long before the operating room. 💙

Before a child can be considered for cleft surgery, our medical teams need to make sure they are ready and well enough to safely undergo a procedure.

During screening, each child is carefully assessed by the team. It’s an important opportunity to understand their individual needs, identify any health concerns and determine the most appropriate next steps in their care.

For families, it can be an anxious moment. For our team, it’s about being thorough, compassionate and putting the safety of every child first.

Because restoring hope isn’t simply about providing surgery — it’s about providing the right care, safely, at the right time.

Beside every little patient is someone carrying hope for them. 💙

For the children who come through our screening days, the journey towards cleft surgery is rarely theirs alone.

Parents and caregivers travel with them, wait with them, comfort them and place an enormous amount of trust in the people caring for their child.

For many families, arriving at screening represents something they may have been hoping for for a very long time — the possibility of treatment and a different future for their child.

We never forget the courage that takes.

To the mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers who place their trust in our teams: we see you too.

Sometimes, the most important part of care is simply making families feel supported. 💙

For parents bringing a baby or young child to one of our screening days, there can understandably be a lot of uncertainty. Our teams take the time to assess each child carefully, answer questions and help families understand what may come next.

Behind every assessment is a collaboration between our medical teams, volunteers and, most importantly, the families who have placed their trust in us.

From the first screening through to surgery and follow-up care, we want every family to know they are not walking the journey alone.

Restoring hope, one family at a time. 💙

Surgery is never a one-person effort.

Every operation brings together people with different skills, experience and responsibilities, all working around one patient.

In the operating theatre, communication and teamwork matter. Surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and other members of the surgical team work side by side — each playing their part in providing safe, high-quality care.

For Operation Restore Hope, our missions also create opportunities for Australian, international and Filipino medical professionals to work together, share knowledge and strengthen relationships that extend well beyond a single mission.

Because lasting impact isn't created by one pair of hands.

It's created by many hands working together. 💙

A little reassurance goes a long way. 💙

For a young child, even a simple medical check can feel unfamiliar and overwhelming.

That’s why having a parent or caregiver close by can make such a difference — a familiar face, a comforting embrace and the reassurance that they’re not facing any of this alone.

During screening, our teams take the time to assess each child carefully while doing everything they can to make the experience feel safe and comfortable for both children and their families.

These early checks may seem simple, but they are an important part of determining whether a child is ready for surgery and planning their care safely.

Precision. Experience. Purpose.

Inside the operating theatre, everything comes down to the smallest details.

Cleft and craniofacial surgery demands extraordinary precision, with surgeons working carefully to restore both function and form for every patient entrusted to their care.

It is highly specialised work — built on years of training, experience and a commitment to achieving the best possible outcome for each individual child.

Behind every surgery are countless decisions, careful hands and an entire team working toward one goal: giving that child the best possible path forward.

This is where skill meets purpose. 💙

From surgery to recovery. 💙

For our youngest patients, completing surgery is only one part of the journey.

As a child leaves the operating theatre, our medical teams remain focused on the careful transition into recovery — monitoring, supporting and ensuring they are safely cared for every step of the way.

Behind every operation is a team of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and volunteers working together, each with an important role in helping a child through their surgical journey.

It is a responsibility we never take lightly.

From the first screening to surgery, recovery and follow-up care, our commitment is to be there throughout the journey.

Hope in action.

Every mission begins with a conversation.

Before a child ever enters the operating theatre, there is a parent with questions, hopes and concerns.

For more than three decades, ORHA Founder Dr Darryl Hodgkinson has taken the time to meet with families, explain their child's condition, answer questions and help them understand the journey ahead.

It's a reminder that medicine is about more than surgery. It's about listening. Building trust. Offering reassurance. And ensuring every family knows they are not facing the journey alone.

Since founding Operation Restore Hope Australia in 1993, Dr Hodgkinson has remained committed to the belief that every child deserves not only expert surgical care, but compassion, dignity and hope.

Because sometimes the most important part of healing begins long before the first incision.

Safety always comes first.

Every patient who comes through our medical missions undergoes a comprehensive pre-operative assessment before surgery.

Simple checks such as blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels and a general health review help our medical team determine whether it is safe for a child to proceed with an anaesthetic and operation.

While these assessments may seem routine, they are an essential part of delivering safe, high-quality care. Sometimes they confirm a child is ready for surgery. Other times they identify medical concerns that need to be addressed first—ensuring every decision is made in the child's best interests.

At Operation Restore Hope Australia, changing lives begins with putting patient safety first.

Because the best outcomes start long before the operating theatre.
