đź’™ Standing With The Philippines đź’™

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today’s powerful earthquake in Mindanao.

The Philippines holds a special place in the heart of ORHA. For more than three decades, we have had the privilege of working alongside Filipino patients, families, healthcare professionals, volunteers and communities.

Today, we stand in solidarity with all those impacted and extend our heartfelt support to the people of Mindanao during this difficult time.

We are especially thinking of the frontline healthcare workers, emergency responders and local communities working tirelessly to keep people safe.

To our Filipino friends and partners, please know that you are in our thoughts.

Stay safe. Stay strong. 🇵🇭❤️🇦🇺

The Longest Wait đź’™

For parents, some of the longest moments of their lives are spent waiting.

Waiting for answers.
Waiting for their child’s name to be called.
Waiting outside the operating theatre.
Waiting and hoping that everything will be okay.

For the children, they may not fully understand what lies ahead. They simply trust the arms holding them and the people caring for them.

Every ORHA mission is about more than surgery. It is about supporting families through every step of the journey — from screening and assessment, to surgery, recovery, and follow-up care.

Behind every successful operation is a parent who has carried the weight of worry, often for years, while searching for help for their child.

Today, we honour the courage of these families.

Thank you to our volunteer teams, local healthcare professionals, donors and supporters who help transform uncertainty into hope, and hope into life-changing outcomes.

Because every child deserves the chance to smile, speak, eat and thrive. đź’™

Hope Begins Here đź’™

Before every surgery, there is a family waiting.

Waiting for answers. Waiting for reassurance. Waiting for the possibility of a brighter future for their child.

Pre-screening day is one of the most important parts of every ORHA mission. It is where patients are assessed, families meet our medical teams, questions are answered, and treatment plans begin to take shape.

For many parents, this is the first time they learn that help is available and that their child may soon receive life-changing surgery.

Behind every patient is a family that has often travelled long distances, overcome financial hardship, and held onto hope for years.

This mother and daughter remind us why we do what we do.

Every mission starts with a conversation, a consultation, and a family daring to believe that things can be different.

Thank you to our volunteer teams and local partners who help turn that hope into reality. đź’™

Mission success is built on teamwork.

Throughout our week at San Juan Medical Center, local Filipino healthcare professionals worked shoulder-to-shoulder with visiting volunteers, bringing their own expertise, experience and dedication to every patient we treated.

This image captures one of those countless moments of focus and collaboration that happen behind the scenes. Every decision matters. Every detail matters. Every patient matters.

Together, we are able to achieve far more than any individual or organisation could alone.

Because changing lives isn’t the work of one surgeon, one nurse or one team.

It’s the result of many people united by a shared purpose. 💙

Long hours. Steady hands. Total concentration.

Some of our volunteer surgeons travel thousands of kilometres, while others are based locally in the Philippines — all united by the same commitment to helping children born with cleft and craniofacial conditions.

Every procedure requires extraordinary precision, teamwork and care — often performed across multiple operating tables over long mission days.

For the patient on the table, this moment can change the course of an entire life.

This is the quiet dedication behind every ORHA mission. đź’™

Four operating tables running simultaneously.
Four surgical teams working side-by-side.
Four opportunities at once to change a life forever.

Behind every ORHA mission is an extraordinary level of coordination between Filipino medical professionals, international volunteers, nurses, anaesthetists, support staff and hospital teams — all moving together with precision, trust and purpose.

While one child is being cared for in surgery, another family is being prepared, reassured and supported nearby. Every role matters. Every person contributes.

This is what collaboration at scale looks like.
This is hope in action. đź’™

In moments like this, dozens of hands, years of training and countless hours of preparation come together for one purpose — to change a life.

Every procedure performed during our missions is a team effort involving surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, local hospital staff and volunteers all working in unison with extraordinary care and precision.

Behind the surgical masks and operating lights are people deeply committed to giving children and families access to opportunities they may otherwise never have.

This is more than surgery.
This is hope in action. đź’™

Behind every patient is a family carrying hope, worry, courage and love.

For many of the children we meet, surgery is life-changing. But for parents, the journey often begins long before they walk through our doors — navigating uncertainty while simply wanting the best possible future for their child.

This is why ORHA exists. To ensure families facing cleft and craniofacial conditions know they are not alone. đź’™

At ORHA, our commitment to our patients does not end when the mission finishes or the operating lights are turned off.

Two days ago, Dr Gerald Abesamis and Dr Sandee Tan conducted a second post-mission follow-up review for many of our recent San Juan Medical Center patients, with a third round of reviews already being planned in the coming weeks.

These follow-up check-ups are an essential part of the recovery journey — ensuring our patients are healing well, monitoring progress, addressing concerns early and continuing the support families need after surgery.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible Filipino surgeons and local medical teams who continue to care for our patients long after our international volunteers have returned home. Your dedication, compassion and ongoing commitment are what make long-term outcomes possible. đź’™

The mission doesn’t end when the surgery is over.

Follow-up care is one of the most important parts of a patient’s journey.

Post-operative reviews allow our team to monitor healing, assess speech and feeding outcomes, manage ongoing care, and ensure every child is progressing as expected after surgery.

Through our local Filipino partners, hospitals, volunteers and long-term programs, support continues well beyond mission week.

Because changing a life isn’t just about the operation itself—it’s about being there for the journey that follows.
