It started with a hairdresser, a client going through chemotherapy, and a conversation in a salon chair.

From that one appointment, Rabbi Dovid and Laya Slavin built Our Big Kitchen, a community kitchen in Bondi that has been feeding Sydney's most vulnerable for twenty years. It has also helped send hundreds of meals a day to the The Rev Bill Crews Foundation's Loaves and Fishes restaurant in Ashfield when they went offline for renovations.

In December 2025, their community was directly targeted in the Bondi Beach attacks. The kitchen did not stop. It multiplied.

In a time when many are experiencing the effects of environmental change, may we be guided by faith, compassion, and hope. Let us seek ways to nurture the earth, protect what is vulnerable, and work together for the wellbeing of all creation.
