Macquarie University Motor Neurone Disease Research Centre

Macquarie University Motor Neurone Disease Research Centre ALS is MND. The Macquarie University MND Research Centre aims to make significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of MND.

https://www.mq.edu.au/research/research-centres-groups-and-facilities/centres/motor-neuron-disease ALS is MND, also called Lou Gehrigs disease, is a rapidly progressive, terminal neurological disease, with no known cure. The MND field has now reached a level of knowledge/understanding of the disease that its time to establish a collaborative research Centre to pull this knowledge/expertise togeth

er at a national level and focus on making breakthrough discoveries in MND

This has led five teams of laboratory researchers to come together and establish Australia’s first dedicated MND at Macquarie University: Prof Gilles Guillemin, Prof Roger Chung, A/Prof Ian Blair, A/Prof Julie Atkin, Dr Nicholas Cole. This unique model brings together these leading researchers from across Australia to work together in a dedicated collaborative environment. This significantly enhances efforts to understand the causes of MND and develop therapeutic treatments. Our unique model provides a coordinated and systematic scientific approach towards understanding and treating a devastating and ultimately deadly neurodegenerative disease, and will provide the template for future endeavors targeting other diseases. In short, through strong collaboration we are tackling the problem of MND from a variety of different scientific perspectives, to develop new ways of understanding the disease and overcome the roadblocks that have been reached by current research. We want this research Centre to represent all Australian’s who have been touched by MND. MND is not well known in the community and is considered a “silent” disease, because sufferers are unable to tell their story. Our research Centre is an important part of their collective story, and we want to engage patients and their families to make an essential contribution to our research program, and help us achieve our goal of understanding MND and developing treatments for this disease. We would like to thank the MNDRIA, who have been long-time supporters of our individual research programs for a number of years. This support has been instrumental in us reaching this point today. We also wish to thank the Snow Foundation, and MND and Me, the Deb Bailey Foundation for their recent support of our research program. We are excited about leading the next chapter of Australia’s MND story – together with MND patients and their families, our supporters and funders, and our Australian and international collaborators, to make key discoveries in understanding MND and using this information to develop and test treatments. Hike for Carlos and MND
Sam Pluis was inspired by her close friend Carlos, who is living with MND, to undertake solo hikes in his honour while raising funds for the MNDRC. Her latest trek took her from Lithgow to Dallis Campground at Glen Davis, with a side hike to the stunning Genowlan Mountain. Carrying a 15kg pack across steep, rugged terrain and facing all weather conditions, Sam covered 110km over six days and five nights.
We look forward to hearing about Sam’s next inspirational adventure.
