"As digital technologies advance, so does the volume and value of data about First Nations peoples, cultures, and languages. Indigenous Data Sovereignty ensures that this information is governed by the communities it comes from, no matter where it is held," Mr Hill.

Leaders from the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC) have called for stronger protections around Indigenous Data Sovereignty at the AIATSIS summit on the Gold Coast, held under the theme “Our Truth. Our Power. Our Future.”

The centre says First Nations peoples must have control over data collected about their communities, Country, cultures and languages, with information only gathered, used and shared under Indigenous leadership and consent.

KALACC representatives also warned that safeguarding language data is critical to cultural survival, saying language sits at the heart of identity and must be preserved and managed by communities for future generations.

The final report has made 52 recommendations to the government to address what it has labelled serious failures, including the 'gross over-representation' of First Nations children. READ MORE: https://tinyurl.com/2nvpf573

“This is a community-led solution to a real, everyday challenge. When people have access to clean clothes and bedding, it supports health, dignity and opportunity – and that has a lasting impact across the whole community and for future generations to come,” Liz Morgan-Brett, CEO of the Aboriginal Investment Group.
