We often talk about education as something that prepares us for what comes next. We study for a qualification, learn a new skill, change careers or take a course because there is something specific we want to achieve.

All of those things are important. But one of the things we enjoy most about adult education is that learning doesn't always need to have a particular destination.

You might learn a language because you've always wanted to. You might become fascinated by a period of history and want to know more. You might finally try painting, join a philosophy discussion or learn about something you've never had the opportunity to explore before.

There doesn't need to be a career outcome or a five-year plan attached to it.

Sometimes learning simply makes life more interesting. Sometimes it leads to a good conversation, a new friendship or a different way of looking at something familiar.

Sometimes we underestimate the value of learning simply because we are curious.

It is one of the things we love at WEA Sydney. There is always something new to discover, and you don't have to justify why you want to learn it.

We don't stop being curious when we leave school. So why do we sometimes think of education as something that belongs to the early years of life?

A career change. A new language. A creative interest. A deeper understanding of history, science or philosophy.

Our reasons for learning evolve as we move through life, and they don't always fit neatly into a qualification or career plan.

For some, learning opens new professional opportunities. For others, it creates a sense of purpose, introduces new interests or provides the opportunity to meet people who share their curiosity.

There is no single age, destination or outcome that defines a lifelong learner.

At WEA Sydney, we have championed accessible adult education since 1913.

Our latest Quarterly Journal reflects on what it means to keep learning throughout adulthood, and why opportunities for learning should remain open at every stage of life.

What if we don’t have the whole picture?

At WEA Sydney, we believe listening is an important part of building a strong culture.

That means creating different ways for our community to share what they are experiencing, from student and tutor representatives and course feedback, to our Council members, Morning Tea with the Executive Director and our feedback wall.

Not every piece of feedback leads to immediate change. But every piece gives us an opportunity to listen, understand and learn.

Because if we are committed to lifelong learning, we should keep learning about ourselves, too.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing about a class is what happens between the lessons.

A conversation with someone you would never otherwise have met.

A new perspective that challenges an assumption.

The confidence to try something unfamiliar.

A shared interest that becomes a lasting connection.

These experiences are an important part of adult and community education, yet they can be overlooked when we measure learning only through qualifications, skills or employment outcomes.

At WEA Sydney, our classrooms bring together people of different ages, backgrounds and experiences, united by a willingness to learn.

In the latest Quarterly Journal, our Executive Director Tiffany Roos explores why community learning matters, particularly in a world where meaningful connection and participation are increasingly important.
