Great to meet another bunch of Inner Westies who braved the wet last night to join us at Gasoline Pony wine bar and music venue in Marrickville.

At night’s end, we had another bunch of solar enthusiasts keen to get going with solar, batteries, hot water heat pumps and EV chargers (that last is a new thing - we’re now receiving a lot more requests for information on charging).

Thanks to the staff at Gasoline Pony for making us so welcome and for providing such excellent pizzas!

Our next Solar and Battery Information Night will be at the Royal Hotel in Leichhardt on June 16 at 7pm. Bookings here:

ONE WEEK TILL SOLAR + HOME BATTERY INFO NIGHT IN MARRICKVILLE!

For a lively, friendly and informative night about solar energy and home batteries, our next community event is next Thursday at Gasoline Pony in Marrickville.

Wondering if solar would work for you? What would it cost? What would it save? Is it good for the climate? Have home batteries really dropped in price? What is a hot water heat pump anyway? We'll answer all these questions, and whatever else you want to ask.

Inner West Community Energy is your local not-for-profit registered charity here to help people with solar, batteries, and perhaps one day going all-electric.

Doors open 6.45pm. Grab a drink, find a comfy chair, think of a tricky question. We'll have light refreshments to keep you going.

HOT WATER HEAT PUMP INSTALLATIONS HIT A NEW MILESTONE IN THE INNER WEST.

You may think hot water is a bit of a dull subject - but for those of us helping households cut power bills and carbon emissions, hot water is almost as exciting as rooftop solar. (And something we’ll be covering at our next Solar and Battery Information Night next Thursday - see below!)

After all, producing hot water uses around one third of a household’s electricity, so if we can cut that with new high efficiency heat pumps, it’ll save a fortune.

It’s now three years since Inner West Community Energy launched our hot water heat pump service. We’d been getting questions from the community about this new technology, while at the same time both the federal and state governments announced rebates for the replacement of old electric hot water units and gas units. So we jumped in, did our research, found a reliable installer in Same Day Hot Water, and started promoting our service.

Today, we’ ve installed over 50 hot water heat pumps.

Our second system was for Carmen Jarrett of Leichhardt (pictured). Carmen says she loves the fact that the stainless steel tank is made in Australia and has a 25-year warranty. She’s had nothing but seamless operation, with free hot water powered by her solar PV. Carmen is planning to get off gas this year whilst undertaking a kitchen upgrade.

Sue, also from Leichhardt, was another of our first installations. “One of the real benefits for me was going all electric; the gas supply charge was about 70% of every bill, so that was a straight-up cost saving!”

Sue says our process was easy. ‘Knowing that both the models and the installer had been vetted was huge,” she says. “I would probably still be researching different models trying to work out the best option without that guidance. Install took less than a day, the rebate was organised for me, and the pump sits in the garden reliably making hot water.”

The costs and benefits of hot water heat pumps will be on the agenda for our Solar and Battery Information Night at Gasoline Pony wine bar, Marrickville, a week today, Thursday, May 28, starting at 7pm. Get there at 645, grab a drink and head to the rear courtyard. Wear something warm!

We’ll supply the pizza.

FIVE DAYS TILL STRATHFIELD "ENERGY MATTERS" FORUM!

Winter’s coming, and for most Inner Westies that’s when our electricity bills are twice as expensive compared to milder months. Our older houses need a lot of heating!

If you’re keen to find out how to keep your winter bills down and still stay warm, the State member for Strathfield, Jason Yat-Sen Li, has organised an Energy Matters community forum next Wednesday evening.

Inner West Community Energy will be there to talk about solar, batteries, heat pump hot water and the savings from going all electric. We’ll be giving a short talk then hanging around afterwards if you’d like to discuss anything one-on-one.

As well, the Energy and Water Ombudsman will be there to talk about saving money on energy bills, and there’ll be a speaker on EVs.

It should be a lively, informative evening. It’s a free event but bookings are essential here via Humanitix:

MAY INTO JUNE WITH SOLAR AND STORAGE!

Interested in going solar, maybe installing a battery, but don't know where to start? Our next Solar and Battery Information Night is being held two weeks from tonight on Thursday 28 May.

We're heading back to Gasoline Pony in Marrickville for a session starting at 7pm.

It'll be our usual friendly format: an introduction to Inner West Community Energy, an overview of how we can help you install quality solar at your house or small business, then it'll be over to you to ask as many questions as time permits. One of our preferred solar installers, one of Sydney's most experienced, will be there to answer your questions.

We suggest you arrive about 6.45pm, grab a drink and settle back to hear all about solar, batteries, and the electrification of everything. The session will run for about an hour.

It's a free event but numbers are limited, please book here through Humanitix:

We started with a vision nine years ago - to make it easier for residents across the Inner West to install solar, removing the hassle factor and trusting us to help them buy a quality solar PV system for a fair price.

Today we’re thrilled to report we’ve installed our 500th PV system!

It’s a 9.025 kilowatt system for Newtown residents John and Elizabeth Kenyon (pictured), a 19-panel system with a 20 kilowatt-hour battery.

In those nine years, Inner West Community Energy has facilitated $5.25 million of residential solar with a total capacity of 3.69 megawatts of generation.

Prominent locals we’ve helped include Anthony Albanese (system number 115, 7.665kW); Kobi Shetty (number 158, 8.3kW); novelist Charlotte Wood (number 165, 5.395kW) and former Federal Minister David Bradbury (system 465, 8.85kW).

When we started, the average system size was just 3.9 kilowatts; now it’s 8.2kW. Plus most people are adding a battery, and our hot water heat pump service is taking off, too. Solar and battery systems that cost over $30,000 two years ago now cost well under $20,000.

These days, our goal is to help people live in an all-electric home powered by the sun.

That’s exactly what the Kenyons of Newtown have just done. Elizabeth Kenyon says they appreciated the common-sense support we provided. “That extra level of expertise,” she says. “Someone who could look at the quote for us, and the fact that you’d worked with people already so you could give us a recommendation as well.”

If you know anyone interested in solar, batteries and the all-electric home, our next Solar and Battery Information Night will see us back at Gasoline Pony in Marrickville on Thursday, May 28, starting at 7pm. It’s a free night that will run for a bit over an hour.

We’ll explain who we are and how we work, then it’ll be over to you to fire questions to us and to one of Sydney’s most experienced solar installers.

We’ll supply the pizza, you supply the difficult questions about solar, batteries, hot water heat pumps and the electrification of everything!
