On behalf of the Greek Pontian Society of Wollongong “Diogenes” Incorporated, Panagia Soumela Sydney, and Pontian Association of NSW Pontoxeniteas, we sincerely thank everyone who attended yesterday’s Holy Liturgy and memorial service.
Students dressed in traditional attire entered the Cathedral standing proudly & we thank the students of Kogarah Greek School and Hellenic Lyceum Sydney for wearing traditional Greek attire. A special thank you to His Grace Bishop Christophoros of Kerasounta for his prayers, comforting words, and generous hospitality.
We continued to the wreath-laying ceremony at the ANZAC War Memorial in Hyde Park. In the Great Hall Auditorium, we commemorated the Greek Genocide and heard heartfelt presentations from the students of Pontoxeniteas NSW, who shared their family histories & origins. We were honoured to hear from keynote speaker Themistocles Kritikakos, author of Armenian, Greek and Assyrian Genocide Recognition in Twenty-First Century Australia, who spoke on intergenerational trauma & Australia’s efforts toward recognition. Dr Panayiotis Diamadis, co-author of Genocide to Regeneration, also presented a copy of the book featuring the photographs of George Devine Treloar to the ANZAC War Memorial.
President of Pontoxeniteas NSW Maria Anthony and past president of Panagia Soumela Sydney spoke on the importance of holding these commemorations at the ANZAC War Memorial, congratulating MCs Kiki Moysiadou and Ismini Stavropoulos, keynote speaker Themistocles Kritikakos, Dr Panayiotis Diamadis, all students, guests, and attendees. They also acknowledged the Joint Justice Initiative, Armenian National Committee, and Assyrian National Committee for their continued efforts.
On behalf of our Pontian community, we deeply appreciate the support shown throughout the day. Thank you to everyone who stood in solidarity and honoured the memories of our ancestors.
We do exist. We matter. Pontos lives through our veins and within our hearts and we remain proud.
May their memories be eternal🙏
