🦇A message from ABS member Oli

Policy and legislation, whether it be at the national, state, regional, or local level has huge implications for bat conservation globally. Our focus is to collate people’s knowledge of policy in their geographic area, in order to understand these global implications, and synthesise this information. Broadly, we intend to assess how GBatNet could potentially assist future policy, and provide recommendations to improve bat conservation.

We want to hear your experiences; where has policy failed bats? Where has policy created positive conservation successes? What is lacking from your regions environmental policies? What do you think is driving these outcomes?

This week, ABS President Leroy Gonsalves and Vice President Kelly Sheldrick were invited to attend the Global Union of Bat Diversity Networks (GBatNet) strategic planning workshop in Baltimore, helping shape the future direction of international bat conservation collaboration beyond the current NSF-funded phase.

It was also fantastic to see so many ABS members contributing across the GBatNet network:

🦇 Justin Welbergen was invited to join the GBatNet Steering Committee.
🦇 Nayelli Rivera represented the Science Communication Working Group.
🦇 Ari Ananda represented the Key Biodiversity Areas Working Group.
🦇 Robin Rowland attended as one of the GBatNet student representatives.
🦇 Malik Oedin and Harry Rust represented the Pacific Bat Conservation Network (PacBat).

The workshop brought together leaders from bat diversity networks around the world to share achievements, align priorities, and collaboratively plan for a sustainable future for bat research and conservation.

We're proud to see ABS members playing such an active role in shaping global bat conservation initiatives.
