The Chinese Australian Forum (CAF) is a non-partisan body established in 1985 to provide the Chinese community with a voice in the Australian political process. It began with the aim of raising the political awareness of Chinese Australians, but this objective quickly evolved and expanded to include involvement in contemporary social and political issues affecting the democratic process in Australia.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Patrick Voon.

On behalf of Chinese Australian Forum, I extend my deepest sympathies to his beautiful wife Patricia and daughter Alison.

Patrick Voon was a Life Member of the Australian Chinese Forum (CAF), serving as President from 2011–2013 and holding various roles including, most recently, Treasurer. He was a leader, a mentor and a friend to the Australian Chinese Forum and the community we serve.

In addition to organising a range of very successful public events, during his period as President:

▪️ Patrick led the CAF complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission against Mr John Laws and Radio 2SM Pty Ltd, alleging racial hatred under the Racial Discrimination Act 1975, leading to an apology and conciliation process.

▪️ Patrick wrote to the then Premier of NSW, Barry O’Farrell MP, concerning comments by a member of Parliament against multiculturalism. In response, Mr O’Farrell confirmed his government’s commitment to promote and strengthen multiculturalism in NSW.

▪️ He led the CAF campaign to urge voters of Randwick City Council to support candidates who would protect the Heritage Listed La Perouse Chinese Market Gardens, which were under serious threat from a proposed extension to Botany Cemetery.

▪️ Patrick addressed the Legislative Council Standing Committee on Law and Justice Inquiry into Racial Vilification Law in NSW at public hearings in NSW Parliament House in 2013. The core findings eventually triggered a complete overhaul of how hate crimes and vilification are handled in NSW through a series of key legislative changes.

Through his passionate advocacy for multiculturalism, Patrick made a substantial impact in the NSW community and leaves a tremendous legacy with CAF and the broader Chinese Australian community.

Quick with a smile, generous and patient as a mentor, and tenacious as a leader.

Patrick, you will be missed.

Last night, CAF was pleased to host a special briefing and networking evening with the leadership of Multicultural NSW, bringing together an outstanding group of Chinese Australian community organisations, leaders and partners.

A sincere thank you to Joseph La Posta, CEO of Multicultural NSW, and James Jegasothy, Deputy CEO, for joining us and for the open, constructive discussion on the opportunities and challenges facing our multicultural communities.

For more than 40 years, CAF has proudly advocated for the Chinese Australian community — championing issues that matter to our community, calling out racism and injustice, creating spaces for civic dialogue, and strengthening civic and media literacy across Australia. By the end of this year, our national Civic and Media Literacy Program will have engaged more than 2,500 Chinese Australians.

Last night, our President Vanessa Chan reflected on something we strongly believe: meaningful progress comes through connection, collaboration and sustained conversation.

The Chinese Australian community is diverse, dynamic and deeply engaged. While we may not always agree on every issue, we share a responsibility to build understanding, strengthen capability, and work together to ensure our communities are heard and empowered.

We were delighted to welcome representatives from a broad cross-section of community organisations and partners, including Haymarket Chamber of Commerce, Chinese Australian Services Society (CASS), Museum of Chinese in Australia 澳洲华人博物馆 (MOCA), Australian Dongbei Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Australian Taiwanese Friendship Association, Chinese Community Council of Australia, Way In Network, Chinese Youth League of Australia Inc, Chinese Herald Daily Australia, and the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Building a stronger, more connected multicultural Australia takes all of us.

The Chinese Australian Forum (CAF) was honoured to attend the Harmony Dinner hosted by Multicultural NSW 🌏

It was a fantastic evening celebrating the diversity that makes our community so strong, and recognising the contributions of multicultural organisations across the state.

We’re especially proud that CAF received the Multicultural Not-for-Profit Medal — a meaningful recognition of the work our members, volunteers and supporters have contributed over many years ❤️

Thank you to Multicultural NSW for hosting such a special event and for your continued support of multicultural communities.
