1 Million Turtles Community Conservation Program

1 Million Turtles Community Conservation Program Without intervention, most turtles will be extinct by the end of the 21st century.

🐢🌏 Happy World Turtle Day! 🌏🐢

Today we celebrate one of the planet’s most remarkable animals — freshwater turtles — and the incredible wetlands and waterways they call home.

This World Turtle Day, we’re excited to share a glimpse of life on our floating habitat islands. From turtle nesting activity to an amazing diversity of waterbirds and wetland wildlife, these islands are showing what’s possible when we create habitat that works *with nature*.

In this video, Professor Mike Thompson and I would like to wish everyone a very Happy and thank all of the communities, volunteers, researchers, schools, partners and turtle champions helping protect freshwater turtles across Australia and beyond.

Freshwater turtles are among the most threatened vertebrates on Earth — but with habitat restoration, community action, innovation and a little determination, we can help turn the tide.

Here’s to healthier wetlands, thriving wildlife, and a future where turtles continue to bask, nest and flourish. 🐢💚

Today on World Turtle Day, we’re celebrating one of Australia’s most extraordinary and endangered reptiles: the Mary River Turtle. 🐢

Known for the striking green algae that can grow on its head and shell, this ancient species has survived for millions of years, yet today faces serious threats from habitat loss, nest predation, and changes to river systems. Found only in Queensland’s Mary River, the species is now listed as endangered.

FAME is proud to support conservation efforts helping protect the Mary River Turtle through habitat restoration, nest protection, monitoring, and community-led conservation action. Every turtle saved helps preserve a truly unique part of Australia’s natural heritage.

Protecting species like the Mary River Turtle is an important part of preserving Australia’s unique ecosystems for future generations. 🐢
