KTF We're an Australian development NGO changing lives, livelihoods and futures across Papua New Guinea.

We work alongside people and communities to deliver projects in education, health, equality and leadership right across the country. We work to improve lives, livelihoods and futures, keeping the great friendship between Australia and Papua New Guinea and the spirit of Kokoda alive. Expanding beyond our original focus region of Kokoda in Oro Province, KTF now works with communities across 17 of PN

G’s 22 provinces....and we have big plans for 2022 and beyond. Our team, 85 percent who are Papua New Guineans, work in partnership with communities to identify their needs and strengths, and together implement programs in the vital areas of education, health, equality and leadership that achieve long-term change. Projects that aim to train high quality teachers and community health workers, provide these professionals with mentoring and professional development opportunities, build educational and health infrastructure, fund the ongoing maintenance and resourcing of schools and aid posts, and provide remuneration to teachers and health workers across rural regions. Projects are supported by the installation of solar energy and light systems to off-grid households in related communities, powering their success. We also promote equality for all and advocate for a zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence, help to generate sustainable income-generating opportunities for women in remote areas, and promote gender equity amongst adolescents through the fun of soccer. Looking to the future, we find and foster the next generation of leaders among final year tertiary students from across PNG. KTF is a member of the Australian Council for International Development and has full accreditation with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trades’ ANCP program; their high standards for operation are integral to everything we do.

The Spirit of Kokoda lives on.

For many Australians, Kokoda represents courage, sacrifice, endurance, and an enduring friendship between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

More than 80 years later, that friendship continues.

Today, it looks like students returning to school at KTF’s Kokoda College and Mt Koiari FODE Centre - the only high school offering along the Kokoda Track - to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

And it looks like supporters like you, helping make that future a reality.

Since 2019, 1000+ students have gained access to education through Kokoda College and the Mt Koiari FODE Centre, bringing opportunity, renewed hope, and learning closer than ever to communities across the Kokoda region.

Education is helping create the next generation of teachers, health workers, leaders and changemakers.

This is the next chapter of the Kokoda story.

A story of partnership.
A story of opportunity.
A story of education.

Right now, every donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $30,000.

Education changes everything.

For 23-year-old Willie, it means the difference between relying on the family garden or becoming a teacher who can support his family and educate his community.

After Willie was not selected for Grade 10 at high school, he spent six years away from school. Back home, he helped his single mother in the garden, growing food for their family.

But Willie never gave up on education.

In his village, he sees young people who missed out on school. He dreams of becoming a teacher so he can help educate the next generation.

Today, he's back studying at Kokoda College, determined to achieve that dream.

His journey isn't easy.

From his remote village, Willie first travels 75 kilometres by PMV (public motor vehicle) to Popondetta, then takes another to Kokoda. In good weather, the journey takes 3 to 4 hours - but during the wet season, it can take as long as 5 to 6 hours on unsealed roads. Not your usual bus ride to school.

Yet the distance doesn't deter him.

Because Willie believes education can change everything.

"I hope to become a teacher in the future so I can support my mother and educate my people."

Willie is working hard to achieve that dream. But his story is still being written.

With your support, education can change everything.

You can help Willie complete high school, take the next step towards becoming a teacher, and one day return home to educate the next generation.

And right now, your impact can go even further.

All donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $30,000 (until 30 June 2026). 💙

Help Willie - and students like him - turn determination into opportunity.

2026 National FODE Conference - The digital future of FODE 🦋

For the past fortnight, the KTF team gathered alongside FODE counterparts from across the country at the 2026 National FODE Conference. Participants were trained on new digital platforms designed to expand access to education across Papua New Guinea, described by National FODE as the “The digital future of FODE.”

We were proud to see KTF recognised as a leading FODE partner, with many attendees keen to learn more about our innovative approach to delivering second-chance education in rural and remote communities.

It's exciting to see the future of FODE becoming increasingly digital, helping more students access education, no matter where they live.

KTF CEO, Dr Genevieve Nelson - who presented at the conference - said it best, "FODE teachers and coordinators are truly the unsung heroes of PNG, providing not just a second chance education pathway, but in so many cases, the only chance."

So proud to see Kicks 4 Kokoda in action at Awala Primary School 💙💚

From sport and teamwork to health, inclusion, and community awareness — this is what it looks like when young people are supported to learn, lead, and thrive.

Students were divided into four teams representing the HERO values of Honesty, Excellence, Respect and Openness. After a nail-biting grand final, Team Openness claimed victory! ⚽🏆

While matches were underway, Just Play engaged younger students through fun football mini-games, and Paralympian Manega Tapari introduced children to badminton through interactive activities.

Awareness booths led by the Organization of Persons with Disability (OPD), Community Development, and local health workers shared important messages on inclusion, gender-based violence, child protection, and health.

A huge thank you to the Awala community and our partners for making days like this possible.

KTF's Kicks 4 Kokoda is generously supported by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through Team Up and delivered in partnership with PNG Olympic Committee

“You can feel the peace here.”

This week, the National GBV Secretariat visited KTF’s Safe Haus in Oro Province. These words stayed with us. Because peace here means something deeper.

🦋 It means safety.
🦋 It means dignity.
🦋 It means the space to begin again.

For women and children experiencing violence, the Safe Haus is more than a place to stay. It’s a place to heal, rebuild, and rediscover hope.

And every safe space like this exists because people choose to care, to partner, and to act.

After 20 years away from school, Nancy made the decision to return to her education - while raising four children and working as a full-time elementary teacher in her community.

"I’ve never had this opportunity before. I don’t need to stress about choosing between my books or medical expenses, I can budget for my family and complete my studies. Because FODE is free, there is no burden."

Through determination and discipline, she became Dux of her class in 2024.
In 2025, she graduated Grade 12.

Now, has been accepted into university to pursue Early Childhood Education.

"Enrolling myself in FODE was the most important thing I did in helping me be successful. It was a privilege to be able to upgrade my studies."

Nancy’s story is a powerful reminder: when access to education exists, futures can change.

“Standing here today are educators who decided that being ‘good enough’ wasn’t enough.” 💚💙

Over 300 students across New Ireland Province have celebrated their KTF FODE graduations. 50 students completed Grade 10 and 175 students graduated with Grade 12 certificates. Bikpela hamamas lo yu!

95% of the students graduating are already in the teaching profession. They are upgrading their qualifications while continuing to teach in classrooms and schools. Their dedication and commitment is strengthening education in their communities and province.

Fee-free. Flexible. A second chance at education. Supported by Newmont Papua New Guinea, over 500 students in New Ireland have access to FODE education.

As Grade 12 Dux Kiapsini Tarsisius shared:
“We told our students, you can do it, and now we can look them in the eye and say, I did it!” 🌟
