Old Andreans Association

Old Andreans Association The Old Andreans Association (OAA) is administered by the Alumni of St Andrew's Cathedral School. www The Association was founded by the third Headmaster Rev.

Percy Simpson as the Old Boys Union (OBU) in August 1906. This was some 21 years following the establishment of the school in July 1885, making it one of the oldest continually-active alumni organizations in Sydney. The history of the association is strongly tied to the development of the school from being 'The Choir School', educating mainly choristers to an Intermediate level (equivalent to the

School Certificate), through to the co-educational institution it is today. Prior to the school offering the Leaving Certificate for the first time in 1960, the activities of the OBU were significantly curtailed by the fact that many students matriculated at other schools. The OBU became the OAA following the introduction of girls to the school in 1999. In addition to fostering connections between the former students, the OAA also aims to maintain a tangible link between this community and the wider School community. The activities of the OAA are strongly linked with the activities of the school and other associations including the Parents and Friends. The association also supports the school through financial contributions and, as a result of recent growth, the establishment of the OAA Scholarship for the child of an Old Andrean. These contributions are made possible through financial membership and direct contributions from members.

SACS FACTOR

Happy SACS Factor day to all who celebrate!

SACS Factor final is today - as we all know, a big day on the School calendar where every house comes together to produce musical perfection and raise some vital funds for South Sydney Anglican.

Here's some fun pics from over the years.

What's your favourite SACS Factor memory?

RETURN TO EVENSONG

A pleasure to welcome so many ex Choristers, families, current choir members, staff and even a former Head of School to our Return to Evensong event last Thursday.

Great to have so many of you swell the ranks of the choir for Evensong once again - many of you haven't lost your voices even after all these years - and even greater to share food and stories over dinner with one another.

Hope to see you all again very soon!

BUREAU CHIEF ANTHONY NOMINATED FOR A WALKLEY

You know we love an Old Andrean shout out of success, so here's another good one.

Great to see Anthony Segaert (OA2017) nominated for a Mid-Year Walkley award - one of the most prestigious Journalism awards in Australia.

Anthony, our 2017 School Captain, is now the SMH Parramatta bureau chief and has been nominated in the public-service journalism category for a series of stories exposing the ructions inside Parramatta Council.

Here's a polished pic of Anthony these days, along with one of him back in Year 11 when he anchored the SACS 2016 Federal Election coverage!

Great job! 👏

SACHA LEAVES US SPELLBOUND

How lucky our Year 11 and Year 12 Elective Music Students were to meet Old Andrean Virtuoso Pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk (OA2002) at the Sydney Opera House yesterday afternoon.

Alexander (Sacha) played Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra - a spellbinding performance of a fiendishly difficult piece which led to no fewer than SEVEN curtain calls and an encore.

Sacha was incredibly generous with our students who were treated to an exclusive meet and greet at the interval. The Old Andrean legend answered questions, signed autographs and took plenty of pictures. He mentioned that he did Music 1 for his HSC at SACS (much to the consternation of our Music 2 students!) and told them he’d been playing this piece since he was 15 - and still discovers something new every time he revisits it.

Sacha’s performance reminded us of the Evening of Celebration and Prizegiving in 2024 when he was inducted into our Hall of Honour and left our audience speechless when he performed some Rachmaninov that night on the Town Hall stage.

Thank you Sacha for your exquisite performance and your time with us, we are incredibly lucky to hear and spend time with one of our most celebrated Old Andreans.

YEAR 12 JERSEYS

Happy Year 12 jersey day to all those who celebrate! Today marks the day that our soon to be newest Old Andreans get their jerseys.

Always amusing to see the names people choose, and which names get past the censors …

Here’s my favourite name from back in 2024.

What name did you have?

LUNCHTIME IN 1972

Before Sydney Square and St Andrew’s House, SACS students would play outside the Cathedral in the space which is now occupied by an eight storey building.

To the right of this photo was the ‘New School’, a space which we called our own but occupied less than ten years and was pulled down to build Sydney Square and SAH

Do you remember when the playground looked like this?
